Today i got rid of the god awful Metzler Sportec jobbies, every lump, groove and over banding i rode over, the ass end would flap about-and yes the pressures were fine. They really didn't give me a lot of confidence which was difficult to contend with through France in the rain and even worse when I got back so..........
Avon Azaro's are on the yellow one so it was only natural to go with the upgraded version, as they are superb......
Man in garage said be careful for the first hundred mile or so, but, it didn't matter as they were perfect from the off, no wobbles, a load of confidence and I could lean into corners for the first time in 6 months, without feeling i'd fall off. A hundred and one lumps bumps and overbanding( that stuff they glue round the patches on the road with) and not a wobble in sight
so i'd give them a massive thumbs up:thumright::thumright:. some may not be so keen to recommend, but if you want a tyre that is good in all weathers, and sticks to road well and last they're ace

I like mine, feel fairly confident in them to within about 5mm of the edge, the few times I have poked them with a stick by hitting manhole covers and the like they have caught grip again in a progressive way, very controllable.
So far 3000 miles, and I reckon they are about halfway past the 1mm bars where the road hazard warranty expires.
My local shop says if I have to use the warranty on them then the tyre from avon is free and it will be £12 for him to fit it inc valve stem and balancing
Well chuffed with them all in all and will be back for another set when these start to show canvas
Chris
what are the prices like for the storms if you don't mind me asking?

+1 for the Avon Storm :) had one on the rear until just before my BT021's and was very happy with it ... however, I can't emphasise just how much of difference it has made to my confidence in having front and rear changed at same time.
Previously was on stock front and Avon Storm rear ... and although it felt better than stock front + rear, it still didn't inspire enough confidence in me. However, since sticking BT021's on front + rear ... I'm much much happier :)
I've just had these fitted front and rear on the Dullsville. I had Diablo's fitted before which I thought worked quite well in the wet. The Storm ST tyres are extremely good. Very good grip in the wet. I was surprised how much grip there was. I haven't yet got to the edge of traction so will reserve judgement as to how much warning they give.
Was looking for something that would give me higher mileage as it will be doing nothing but going up and down the motorway. It's the winter commuting hack. Wasn't impressed with the price so hope the quote of high mileage is true. So far, very impressed.

Mine so far have 3000 miles under them and there must be about 0.5mm of tread worn off them, they look like they'll be there a while.
Then again your results may vary, mine aren't exactly stressed with a mighty 33bhp on them...

Think I am going to go for Storms. Set of tyres right before Xmas, right before the 15,000 mile service and my front pads are goosed. KER-CHING!!:(.
Was wondering if anybody had used them on the SV. Good to know there has been some guinea-pigs!:)
Have been on Vipers for a year, maybe half a mm. away from the wear indicators on both aty the moment but have just calculated mileage at 1600 for a rear and 7,000 for a front.Horrendous !#-o:( £197 fitted and balanced for a set.
Never found them lacking in grip so very confidence inspiring to really thrash the thing when its nice and dry, but if i am honest they are wasted in the wet and on my daily commute (mostly wet;):D). A bit too good for my tired front forks too.
Hoping the Storms on the lightweight SV will be as good as they are on GSX14 (3-5k on a rear). Looking to get at least double on the rear than the Vipers.
Anybody got prices fitted and balanced for Storms? Something to aim for.:)
Cheers.

What tyre pressure do you run these at? According to my tyre fitter (Ride in bike tyres in Reading) they should be at something like 40/42psi, whereas normal tyres are more like 33/36psi? I've tried both pressures and the tyres feel fine, but I want to run the tyres for as long as possible.
Otherwise they're great tyres and I'm happy that I seem to have got a great deal - £165 fitted to loose wheels!:D
Luckypants
03-12-07, 01:51 PM
Avon say 36 / 42 psi on their tyres.
I have them on the Dullsville so can't compare directly. But they do a have higher pressure than 'standard'. The dullsville has 42/46, the Diablo Strada's that were fitted before were at 36/42.
Mark at Ride In Tyres in Reading pretty much knows his tyres. As he should do being a fitter. He's always got my pressures spot on and never asked what they should be. :thumleft:
Don't forget though, that to a degree, tyre pressures are pretty much a personal choice.
Quite a lot of Deauville riders are recommending the Storms on the forum. Seems to be a general thumbs up for them. Haven't heard a bad word yet.

OK - I was going by this (http://www.sv650.org/sv_faq.htm#The%20correct%20pressures%20for%20Avon) from main site and those pressures worked well for me. But this on the Avon site (http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/?page=fitment&method=fitments&manufacturer=57&id=1270&model=sv%20650%20s&year=2001) makes a liar of me, so Chris looks like you are right...

Well, I know alot of people play around with pressures.
What difference would you expect from upping the pressure?
Well, I know alot of people play around with pressures.
What difference would you expect from upping the pressure?
Depends on the bike, how the suspension is set up etc...
Standard pressures are a generic. Not a specific.
Alpinestarhero
17-12-07, 02:40 PM
Upping the pressure would make everything feel a bit harder; might feel harsher at low speeds, might feel a bit more flighty at higher speeds. Porbably increased "feel", and perhaps reduced grip to to descreased size of contact patch, although this is arguable.
Likewise, if you drop the pressures, the bike feels smoother at low speed, maybe a bit wallowy at high speed, and heavier to turn in. Potentialy more grip from larger contact area but again this depends, since there is more movement in the tyre.

Also, higher pressures make the tyre take longer to heat up, as it flexes less.
Tyre pressures are odd, frinstance I always ran Roadtecs and Stradas at 3psi more than stock front and rear- both tyres had this sort of weird shimmy thing that they'd sometimes do when turning hard, which goes away at higher pressure and gets absolutely horrendous at lower pressures. I dropped them on the advice of an "expert" at a trackday to 30/33 and they were rotten, they felt really disconnected. Put them back up to my normal and went faster. At 36/39 they feel similiar to how Sportecs feel at 33/36, which I think is down to carcass stiffness.
yorkie_chris

Comparison is everything in tyres, and I can now tell you that a 180 pilot sport, squared off rear at 38psi with a storm ST front at 33, works, but feels absolutely f###ing horrible.
It squirms, drops in, fidgets, wallows and other such nefarious activites.
But it was free, and I can't get a new avon till tomorrow. Such is life :p

Nice to have a deep bit of tread again, just in time for the monsoon we are getting up here the past couple of days.
Definite firmer ride than the Vipers. Hopefully they will get to see a dry country rode before they get squared off!

£183 fitted to loose wheels at local tyre place
£145 delivered from RoundandBlack and £5 per wheel fitted at above local place.
Take it to the local tyre place? They do cars mainly but have seen a few bikes there. Any idea if the kit used to fit bike tyres is different to car tyres? Will they wreck my rims?

Got my Storms fitted and have been mighty pleased with the 400 miles so far. The rear looks fat for a 180 so I think it looks trick (for a VFR). Lets see how they perform next 500 miles :D
yorkie_chris
25-03-08, 04:13 PM
The 160 on mine looked fatter than the norm. fatter than the 160 supercorsa on it now.
The rear one I've jsut taken off is nearly done, maybe 1.5mm left on it, but it still gripped and handles really well, good enough that my last jaunt down into wales took the chicken strip down to meybe 5mm.
It's done around 7000 miles, which isn't to be sniffed at for a rear thats done mostly commuting.

Ask the rest of the crew, especially Jamessunhill as he was following close all that afternoon....... Was a small group after Sunday lunch and we gave it some stick. Basically as much tyre as I need I think, make up your own mind about how much that is (you've seen me ride).

true, you are quite slow........;) joking, you are far far better than me so if they can cope with your riding they will handle mine. Idealy i would love a very sticky tyre in the dry and warm but that is almost as good i nthe wet. the OE 0-15's are just not that at all,
they are bloody goodd in the dry, as i was up with you top 5 or 6 on the sunday compared to tip toeing on the sat afternoon.

Neio they're as good in the dry as they are in the wet.
The storms do exactly what they say on the tin....sports/touring tyre....you feel like your riding on rails, they don't take too long to warm up either, once stuck they stick like sticky flies on fly paper. Granted the Azaros on Suze were the ones before the storms, but even with my naff riding, they kept me on the road. However i do have the storms on the black bike, and...................gawd I sound like a tyre saleswoman,,,lol

All.......quick question, what do you think will last longer.....the Storms or Z6's?
As some may know from NW I am on my stock tyres and have got to 6000 miles. I commute daily 20 miles each way but its all lovely A38 twisties.....so I think can probably puch another 1500 out of the stocks. But, what with the summer and the AR coming up I am saving and looking now.

Unbeatable tyre in the wet, veryy good in the dry but when pushed to the limit they squirm around a bit. They are supposed to but a couple of times on roundabouts they've felt like I was losing the front. Still they did give you the feedback so you could adjust rather than just tucking under which was good. All in all I give them a 9/10, only bettered by BT021's in the dry but those tyres are not as good in the wet as the Storm's.

Round and Black on eBay still sell Azarros , I was going to bag one for my rear as I still have loads on the front Sportec M1 Tyre . Then when that was worn out I was going to get a pair of Storms fitted . I was round my mates yesterday and comparing the Azarros and the Storm tyres . The Azarro has more rubber on it whereas the Storms have a similar tread pattern but more treads ...... and damn are those tread patterns deep and a surprisingly light tyre for it`s size too .

The Storm is a better tyre than the azarro, but I was getting 2k mls more out of an Azarro. I do 12/14k per year so tyres are a big part of my budget. I'd rather have the extra mls and work round the limits of the Azzaro.

Storm vs Azarros is a bit moot. Do you meen Azarro II (AV35/36 squiggly pattern) or Azarro III (AV45/46 criss/cross pattern)? I had AV45/46 combo on the SV and liked them a lot but I got to say that the Storms are better in the wet though and seem to have more ultimate grip than I need (i.e. not made them slide yet)

You're right Andy, the Storms are very different though, they might well be the replacement for the Azaro II's but they don't flex as much, seat of the pants stuff I'd say the construction is very different, they seem to be very sure footed and have a very liniar lean to them (bit like the Bridgestone 010/020's of old but better), equally good in wet or dry so far although I can't push them as far as once I might have.
Just broached the 4,000 mile mark on these now and they seem to be wearing quit well, so generally well pleased at present.

On second set of these now... 9k on set #1 and they held their profile quite well, seemed to flatten the profile slightly rather than squaring it in a sharp way... Could have used the front with another rear.
All scrubbed in and the wet performance is amazing again, turn in's a little slower than the track supercorsas but it's back to a 60 rather than 70 profile on the front too.
I don't recomend a long trip, 2 up with heavy luggage as the best way to scrub them though :-P

FWIW my front has just given up the ghost after 9000 miles. Right side of the tyre is pretty bald. Still tread on centre band and tyre still has grip, just it is right at the legal minimum on the right.
The rear was changed after just 4000 miles which was a disappointment, but current rear is about two thirds worn at 5000 miles. This is pretty good given that the VFR is a heavy bike and 3500 of those miles were laden with luggage.
I still rate these tyres very highly in the wet and dry. They will respond to a hoon really well giving more grip than I can use, but at the expense of wear. I believe that 4000 miles from my first rear was due to riding with certain members of this forum at warp 9 for much of that time. Riding more sensibly has seen much lower wear rates.

You been riding with a Blue Mr Zulu?
The rear on my Dullsville is all spent. I don't think I got much more than about 4.5k out of it. I have to say though, bloody good tyre. Loads of grip in the wet. I go round the twisty bits of my ride home an average 10mph more than I would on the SV with Z6's on when it's wet and a considerable amount of extra lean.
In the dry I'm constantly hitting the pegs on the ground without even thinking about it. But I think it's the dry riding which kills the tyre. They just get too warm too quickly.
Still going to buy another new rear one though. Just have to hope for more rain. I really do enjoy stuffing the super sports riders round roundabouts on my barge, with no power and a leaking exhaust.
I've just bought some for when I get back on the road, after hearing you all rave about them, they must be worth a try :)

Funnily enough my rear storm is near the end of it's life, having ground out both pegs and exhaust at times the performace was never left wanting in either wet or dry (in fact pretty much the same in both), they more than out performed the bike itself (at 110 mph coming off the end of Northolt's runway the judder from the forks was far more worrying than the rock solid feel for the tyres even leaned right over).
Judging by the looks of the things, the rear will have covered about 9.5k and the front is a about 2/3 gone.
Although my style isn't exactly pedestrian, I have developed a certain care for my rubber so always seem to get better mileage than some :smt102
Oh and they are fitted to a Triumph Thunderbird Sport, 92 bhp,209kg (dry)
Cheers Mark.

I can't find them locally for less that £210 ride-in ride-out :(
I got mine on ebay for 146 quid or something similar ;)

Yeah I've seen them, but I wouldn't be able to fit them
Fair enough- 20 quid to get them fitted then, total less than 170. If I bough them off the bloke I had fit them, it would've cost about 205 quid.

Sounds like what they're quoting me
Will most places fit them if you take the tyres in for that sort of price?
I'll ring a few fitters tomorrow
that was to loose wheels, I don't know what it'd be otherwise.

I guess you need front and rear paddock stands for that
Most places will charge over the top for fitting if you have bought the tyre from elsewhere. Makes sense.
Mark at Ride In in Reading charges £20 per wheel for tyres fitted he didn't supply. Or if you buy the tyres from him I think it's £5 per wheel. At least that's what he charges me, but I'm special.
He always gives me very good prices, especially when I also was looking to buy them from other sources. He made it worth my while to keep going to him.

Don't fancy pretending my bike is yours for a weekend to get them fitted?

It would almost cost me as much in petrol getting to Scotland and back as it would to pay the extra to get them fitted here
But thanks for the (confidence inspiring) offer :batman::thumright:
Didn't consider that bigape, the bloke who fitted mine gives me better prices cos he's had so much bleedin' money off me :p

My rule- never make an offer you think people might take up.
