The Prince of Wales rushed to help an injured motorcyclist after an accident on a mountain road.

The prince, who is on holiday at Balmoral, was driving a Land Rover Discovery when he saw 52-year-old Hugh Simpson, who had fallen off his motorbike seconds earlier and plunged down a 15ft embankment.

Charles and his Scotland Yard protection officers in a following vehicle stopped and hurried to help Mr Simpson, who ended up only a few feet short of a fast-flowing river.

The detectives gave him first aid and the royal party waited with him until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital in Dundee, where he had surgery on a shattered wrist.

The incident took place late on Sunday afternoon on the Old Military Road, or A93, near the Glenshee Ski Centre in Aberdeenshire.

Mr Simpson, a salesman from from Crieff in Perthshire, was riding a 187mph Kawasaki 1200 ZZR. Last night he said from hospital: "I cannot thank Prince Charles and his bodyguards enough.

"I came around a corner and hit a patch of gravel. I had just about regained control when I ran out of road and hit a grass verge.

"I woke up lying face down with the bike beside me. I knew my wrist was smashed and was relieved when the Prince's men turned up.

"They were first aid experts and had all the medical kit required in their Land Rover.

"They had oxygen and splints and a neck kit they put around me. They made me feel quite comfortable very quickly.
"They even phoned the hospital to inquire how I was later on."

Good on you Charley:thumbsup:

Fair play to him, that has certainly made me think of him in a different light.

Nice story. One of his lads rides doesn't he?

On the other hand, this

... was riding a 187mph Kawasaki 1200 ZZR...

irrelevant journalistic rubbish never fails to annoy me.

This also ****ed me off, it insinuates to the dumb and quick to jump to conclusion brigade that the rider was doing those speed at the time of the accident.

Right.
Total "He had it coming to him the silly ****" subtext there.

In all the patting of the back of Ol Prince Charley he's hardly like just to drive past is he, he's done nothing more than the average man would have done! Could you imagine the backlash had he driven past.

Headline:
Prince Leaves Man for Dead in Ditch

It would hardly the greatest PR stunt.

I'm not slatting the guy, I quite like him as it happens, I'm just pointing out that nothing really amazing has taken place other than one man has help another.

If you are going to crash and you cant manage to do it in front of an ambulance thats not a bad option.
I met Charlie once, and he has so much more personality than his public image.
Good for him.

but it would have been easy for him to drive past worrying it could be some kind of ambush. You know how mad a world we live in! I think he always seems very level headed, he's more than aware what position of power and influence he has yet he just goes about his every day business

I think both lads have had a thrash around Goodwood if I remember, with Harry being the faster. Mind you, that would have been according to the paper that no-one really believes :plod::alien:

And you can't come down that road at 187mph- about 130ish, tops ;)

Have you never come off a bike then? Most cager don't stop. Besides, how would we have know it was Prince Charles, if he'd not stopped? In any event, I don't think he made a calculated decision, "Ho hum, best stop and help, or it'll be all over the tabloids." I think he's probably a decent bloke, saw the guy crash and did what he could to help.

Charles did nothing and got his bodyguards to do the work!

In Scotland...it is legal to leave the scene of an accident as long as you are not the cause.

So Charles was not legally bound to help in this cause.

Actually i'm with Swiss on this one.

I'm certainly not taking any praise away from him stopping to help and considering the help that he could offer was more then any mere Joe Bloggs passing by it was no doubt much more appreciated.

However, is it just me that thinks to stop at an accident site and give what help you can isn't just something nice people do.. I would like to think that it is something everyone would do in his situation. I know that perhaps this is nieve thinking in this day and age!

I'm also confused as to what bearing it has on the situation that it isnt a legal requirement to stop?! If you see an accident and you can help surely you have a moral obligation to do your best to help??

Nice gesture, probs anyone woulda done it though, good that he got decent treatment from the start though. Maybe felt a bit responsible due to his lads having bikes...

+1 on the dodgy journalism too!

Morality and legality are not the same.

But in Scotland that is the law.

anna
17-10-07, 03:32 PM
I understand that basket ;)

... however i was just pointing out that just because it's not a legal requirement doesnt mean that it isnt a moral requirement...

and surely someone who is as prestigious as ol charlie boy clearly he has a moral responsibilitiy to uphold. ???!??

If I felt like being a d*** I could point out that if they abolished the monarchy and plowed that money into better public services then instead of helping one crashed motorist he could help all of them ;)

I think the problem is that with recent threads showing that people would rather take photos of injured bikers rather than help, it is nice to know that the Prince of Wales, someone who might have a small reason not to stop (heavy schedule, terrorist attack, not liking plebs or whatever), still stops.

The Prince is a marked man.
The Terrorists run a dry run first, test the waters, see how he reacts, sure enough, hook line and sinker there he is.
OK.
Now to business.
Fill the blackbird (think of all that lovely fairing room) with C4.
Stage another "crash" just up the road from Charles...
Oh, hello... You seemed to have crashed your motorcicle old chap! Let me assist KaBOOM.

You heard it here first folks.

Its always about the terrorists.
And/or Steve Jobs.

would the blackbird fly over the prince and the zzr1200? Even columbo would struggle working out that one! ace! ;)

Yes.

Read what I have written. If you're finding it difficult I'll try using less complicated words.

The guards could have shot the biker so he is very lucky to be alive.
