Quick poll on what you think is most important single security device? Occasionally will be leaving the bike in town for a few hours. Rest of the time is safely locked in the garage.

got to be a chain for me.. obviously what you chain it too is a factor. A lamp post/concrete street lamp through the frame (not just the wheels) is a good start..

Depends where I'll be leaving it. If there's something to chain it to I'll use a chain, if not a disc lock as it's less bulky to carry. An alarm/imobiliser is used anyway with either.

Erm, for me? None.

Bikes insured. Putting all manner of security gizmos makes it more attractive to a tea leaf IMO, but if pushed, I would carry a disc lock.

Someone will be along to tell you its better on the back wheel, but I think front....

I disagree, maybe so if your garage has obvious security like door bars etc. but in a public place like a town center they will be looking for the easiest one

I like to park mine in the most obvious, busy place possible, right outside the engineering dept. at uni is good for me being a lazy f###er, and I use a disclock.

Also a very important security feature of my bike which was free is its smashrat appearance, covered in grease, ACF50 and muck, dented tank artfully sprayed satin black etc. Who'd want to nick it! :p

What he said. No one steals ratbikes to order. :)

You guys obviously hadn't seen Jester's bike, that was knicked earlier this year :P

Where's the "All of the above" option? More the better, to a point. If you have a £1000 bike, spending £500 on ground anchor, alarmed disc lock, high quality chain, thatcham rated alarm and immobiliser is daft.

At the end of the day, if they can't steal it because of all the crap you put on it, they may just cut all the wires, slash the tyres, set it on fire or whatever just to spite you.

Re-read the question ... "what you think is most important single security device"

Valid point there though I guess ;-)

Personally, I'd say my disc-lock, as my revolver 'chain' takes a bit longer to apply ... however I've countered this by keeping my disc-lock under the pillion seat and then wrapping the revolver 'chain' around the pillion seat, so now I HAVE to remove the revolver to get to the disc-lock, so it essentially forces me to use BOTH of them

EDIT: I must have female genes somewhere in my DNA ... I've changed my mind  LOL

Best single security device is chain ... and chain it to something SOLID and IMMOVABLE.
Ignore what I said above ;-)

Best security is to not make it worth nicking.

Make it look like a moped :smt019

Maybe chavs, but not professional thieves. Professional thieves wouldn't take it personally and risk being charged with the additional crimes of arson and criminal damage (they could already be done for breaking and entering if they were in your garage).

For out and about, a chain. Try to find something to lock it to, to stop the quick "lift into the van".

For in the garage, a solid padlock to secure the cupboard that contains all your tools (especially grinders/drills etc.)!

I'd have to say chain - but I don't have one. I use a disc lock on the rare occasions I have to leave the bike somewhere it will be vulnerable and unwatched by me, but apart from that it's just the steering lock and a shiny data-tag sticker.

I would add disc lock/alarm/tracker/chain if the bike cost me £10000. But it would cost more than the bike is worth to add all these and a pain to carry and use them all.
Forget relying on insurance- they will always get it back through premiums. I was hoping that alarms were good deterrent with the new GPS/mobile phone trackers getting cheaper. Looks like a solid lock+chain is the favorite then.

Okay guys this how bikes are nicked.....

The normal MO for pros is they use trasnsit van, that has been padded out with matress in the back to prevent noise, a couple of guys jump pick you bike and put it in the bike. They take care of the alarm buy smashing a screw driver or something simlar right through through the fairing, its to disable ie no noise.

Alarms are good casue they scare people off and stop people starting the bike. A good chain attached to something soild through the swing arm, will help makes the thevies work harder. To be honest if they want your bike they will take it.

Do all you can to make it harder to be stolen. My bike is parked in a secure car park at work they would have to dumb to try and get in there, same at home, its only really out and about I worry about the bike. But I would have to carry a chain around.....some people just see a bike and see if they can nick it take it for a ride and crash it.
