Remoulds – don’t believe the hype!!!

Ok, so I bought a 2nd hand Kondore remould last year … not only is it a remould, but it is 170 section. :smt106 Last year, when I said I had put it on (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=85529&highlight=remould), I got loads of people wagging fingers and telling me how lethal they were … :-o

Well, I asked them to verify the claims … and sure enough things went pretty quiet … so I continued on … :smt095

To add to the story, about 2/3 of the way through the tyres life, I got a massive chunk cut into it (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=93157&highlight=numberplate)when the rear number plate jammed on it and snapped off … this left a rather nasty looking flap!! :shock:

At that point I thought about changing it, but I had literally only just put it back on after getting a puncture in another tyre a couple of weeks before(which I had swapped mid-term) … so against my better judgement, I took the risk … :smt003

As you can see from the pic below, the tyre has now well and truly come to the end of its life … :(

Was it a lethal ticking time-bomb??… er … evidently not :cool: … it had ample opportunity to delaminate or spit me off too, especially after the massive cut/flap incident 2/3 of the way throguh its life … remember, throughout its life I have used it at {caughs} … all sorts of speeds … so it was tested for real ...

It's always sad when a tyre comes to its end :cry: (Notice 'flap'):-

Ok, so after using a remould, would I buy one new???

Probably not, it didn't wear that well, would I put another 2nd hand one on if it was going 'cheap' ... too right I would :cool: :smt041

The trouble with them is theyre very inconsistant in both compound and carcass.
If you get a good one theyre ok, but bad ones can be really bad!!
I have fitted new ones for people and theyre egg shaped and if your lucky to get a round one then they take 60+ grams to balance them.
because there is not a set carcass used you never know what the tyre is based on and they are always very heavy (like twice the weight of a 'proper' tyre!)

But the coloured ones are cool for burnouts

To be fair it used to be hard to find a round Dunlop!! :D

As for carcass, I hear what you say about that they might have piles of different donor tyres and you don't know from which yours originated, but presuming ALL come from 'proper' tyres at some point (to become a remould it must have been a 'proper' tyre at some point) ... you would be implying that some 'proper' carcases are not up to the job??

Or just that some take remolding better than others?

I think a lot of it is down to usage too, if you rip up and down the motorway all day every day the poor tyre is under more stress than a town commute ...

theres a company by us called Tomahawk tyres they make those hideous orange and green tyres, i read a test report the once and they used these tyres and said they were brilliant? Tomahawk are remold tyres.http://www.bikersweb.co.uk/Features/ProductReviews.aspx?ArticleId=548
the local stunt riders at Bassett's pole use the orange ones i suppose there cheap enuf to destroy.

I had tomahawks on my B12 and they were great, as good as the Bridgestones it had on when I got it.
