How do you create a google map?
I can add placemarks where I want to go, but how do I get it to calculate a route from one to the next placemark?

Go on 'get directions'. Set your start and end places, you can then drag the route with the mouse.

I found a program called ITNConv on the Interweb, which primarily is designed to convert routes from mapping programs (Autoroute, etc.) to those used by SatNav units (TomTom, etc.). It also has an editor that use Google Maps to do a route and generate an itineraray file.

Then if I do that it changes from 'My maps' to 'Search Results' and i can't see how to save it.

1) Go to google maps.
2) Setup your route ("from: [place] to: [place]").
3) Click My Maps.
4) Click Create new map.
5) Give it a title.
6) Add any placemarks you want.

Done.

How do you save it after you have made changes to the route? Or can you only ever save it once after you are totally happy with the route (& hopefully your computer doesn't crash in the 2 hours it takes you to do it?)

Once you give it a name, it saves auto-magically. Then if you change the route at all, or add placemarks, there should be a save icon in the top right. It also auto-saves every few minutes.

Nope don't see any save button. And when I go back into My Maps, nothing useful is saved. :(

Thanks, read that but it still doesn't let you save google's route instructions.

Can you screen capture and save as a text doc? or cut and paste? (I can also save the map but not the text)

I think you have to be logged into Google (using a Gmail account) to have the kinda functionality you want (but I could be wrong?!) ;-)

I've just tried it and I can only "name" a route if I'm logged in.

yup logged in. I use Gmail, so not a problem to log in. Still doesn't work, but thanks anyway

OK, Stu, apologies for the delay:

1). Login to Google. (mail address in bold along the top of the screen).
2). Get your directions (for example, search "leeds to london" (without quotes) and get the directions on screen).
3). Click "My Maps" on the tabs on the left.
4). Click "Create a new map" just below the "search" tab. Note, this map is "Untitled," which is ticked, and the directions are still visible on the map, just no text is there on the left.
5). Give it a name, and a description if you like. Without a name, you can't save it!
6). Alter the blue directions line to your taste (I dragged from Rotherham over to Scun-t-horpe - no idea why). This changes you back to the search tab.
7). Go back to "My maps" and choose a different map (if you have a different map there - I do :D).
8). Go back to the map you just made a minute ago - it's still there, with all the details you put in manually. So long as you kept saving it whenever you see the "Save" button active. When it's not active, changes are saved auto-magically.

If you want to get written directions at any point, instead of the "My maps" dialog on the left, simply drag the route a little - even if it doesn't actually change.

HTH

Note to TSM: The language filter doesn't like S****horpe, not a big deal, not many people do! :D
