..that I have only just entered the great world of biking...
..that my new SV only has 300 miles on the clock..
..that I don't even own a proper set of leathers/textile suit
..and yet...
I am already looking for a new bike ??
Don't get me wrong, I love my SV. Its new, its cute, its abit of a growler and it's mine BUT why do I still persist on looking in Bike Trader et al. I am trying to pinpoint exactly why I am looking (ie : faster bike, more grunt, styling) but I can't put my finger on it..
Is the ownership of motorbike going to go through this pertetual cycle of swapping and upgrading? I have a crappy old peugeout 206 which I love, wouldn't change it for the world - why is it then that I am so restless with my bike ??

it's because you're still running it in, i felt the same, let it go, wait until you can unleash the beast after 1000m and you'll be grinning ear to ear. after 3000m it all starts to come together and surfaces where you'd freak out and tense up become much easier to ride, you're more relaxed and comfortable and as a result your riding takes on a less mechanical and more spiritual approach, you're in a state of zen like oneness with the machine and nothing can stop you
having said that, i did buy another bike a few weeks ago though...

Some people never settle, I know folks who change bikes about every 6 months, and others who're always deciding to sell but then don't, for whatever reason. Alternatively, it could be that it's just not the bike for you, it does happen... But it's just a wee bit premature for that ;)
Wait until its bedded in and then decide.
I sometimes question whether or not to upgrade, but then i have rides like this weekend......
Glorious day.....
Very long ride in the derbyshire dales.....
Finish at matlock.....
Head for home on same route I have done 1000 times before....
Give a GSXR1300 a good run for his money on some of my favourite twisties....
Have him ask me if the bike is an SV1000, before pointing out the 650 stickers and seing his face drop....
Wash the bike to showroom clean for 3hours....
Brilliant....
Wouldnt be half as fun on a high screaming SS that supposed to be quick and can never really give it beans.

When you find the right bike you'll stick with it, but give the SV a chance till its run in properly. If its your first bike, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise.
I looked and looked, till I found my GSXR now I'm settled its all the bike and more than I'll ever want.
I'm on my fourth bike since 2003, and I am always thinking of what I want next. Can't afford it at the moment but would like a FireBlade (the 954cc version from 2002/3) or a GSXR750, always looking on the internet despite lack of funds:rolleyes:.
Don't make the mistake of actually going into a bike showroom, if you're anything like me you will end up with another bike....

I'm the same. I could have the fastest sexiest thing on earth and I'd still want something faster sexier. I guess this not only goes for bikes eh!? :p

Patience my friend, patience. Get out and buy youself some kit........
....see this first .....http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=64746 ........
....then get out and do some miles watching every little move that those devious cagers make, whilst feeling a bit more secure. That is - get the running-in done.
After this.........................
.....start enjoying the bike sensibly now that you have it's true power beggining to flow...........................
...........last of all (and it sounds awful (sorry):(), learn to ride. The test etc only teaches you to work the machine and follow some rules in order to an exam. You need to learn the skills that'll put you in the right place at the right time to enjoy your biking.
Stick with it - I hope you'll start to REALLY love it all.
Garry;)
P.S. We've all been through your stage at some time AND we're ALL STILL learning (despite what some might say.
I had a Bandit 600 and only kept it two weeks. I kept the SV for 6 months but within three months I was looking on biketrader. I then got my 636 and within four months I was starting to plan ahead and look in dealers etc.
With me it was a result of buying a compromise. I couldn't afford (or wasn't prepared to make the financial commitment) what I really wanted so went for something a little cheaper and a little more sensible each time.
False economy.
If I had just bought what I really wanted in the first place then sure I would have got hit with insurance and a higher purchasing cost but actually I lost more in depreciation by buying and selling bikes.
With the exception of the 636 the other bikes were technically speaking perfect bikes. I could not really fault the SV in any way. It did exactly what it said on the tin and I couldn't have asked for more given the price. It was simply a case of me buying the wrong bike.

Independant - Very true sir, very true indeed. Haven't seen that thread before so it's quite an eye opener. Hear what you say about my riding skill though. Currently I am somewhere between over-cautious due to inexperience, over-cautious because its new and shiny and i dont wan't to break it and over-exuberance because i think i look like the mutts nutts on my new machine :D. Had a cheeky little 30-miler after work and felt much better. Still a little dodgy going around tight corners but the overall confidence and feel of the bike is definately improving. Just wish I had bought it 3 mnths earlier.. riding round freezing my nuts off isn't doing anyone any favours. Good to hear others are constantly looking up the Bike Trader to see what's happening as well - guess having a little window shop now and then can't do you any harm at all :D
...
Do you not have any, either fond memories or thoughts that it stood you in good stead to go through the learning curve?
I am on a similar path to yourself. 125, Bandit, SV, ZX7R and would like a litre bike in time but I would never wish 125-> Litre bike on anyone.
It's also a case of buying & selling wisely to avoid being hit by depreciation.
I made a profit on my 125 & Bandit and insurance claims have all but paid for my SV which I still have.

I've spent so long looking at bikes on biketrader etc that now I can actually take my bike out, it seems very strange to me that I actually own a bike. The guy I was doing my test with and I went on down to the Harley/Buell and Suzuki dealer down my road (literally 5 minutes walk from my house, awesome), and were gawping at the new Buell line for a rather long time.
The SV is more than enough for me at the moment, from having to downshift to go up even the slightest hill on the Yam YBR125 to the power I have now, it's an awesome feeling.

Mr.Wizard your dilemma has been analysed scientifically and the findings show that those suffering from it are indicating a sense of insecurity of their "John Thomas". Dont be a worrying, deal with it.;)

Well first, get some kit. Spada kit is cheap and good (get a jacket and trousers for less than £200) and you need some good boots and some good gloves. Obviously you got a helmet, otherwise you wouldnt be legal to ride!
Then get used to your SV. Learn about how to ride a big bike smoothly and efficiently (not nesacerily quickly) so that when you come to your next bike, you wont be overwhelmed (assuming you'll be getting a bigger / faster bike)
Nothing wrong with looking though :D
I want an SP2

Just bought a GSXR750 & loving it...but what do i find myself doing at lunch times? BIKETRADER:p

I am on my fourht bike this year - and no I havent crashed the other 3 ;)
I must admit that I did a few more miles on my first bike (about 4000) before changing it. I find it takes me while to get the best out of a bike, so get to know the SV first. They might not look quite as trick as a GSXR or ZX6 but they are wicked bikes for the money.
Everyone looks through bike trader - its called dreaming!
I want an SP2

Nice choice...

I wouldn't worry about it, I still look and dream and think yeah I want something else as well, along with the SV I could if I really wanted but I really need to get on the propery ladder first! though there is R6 that has been just sat there at work and rotting away, i want it! Must look into that really, though I think I may be dreaming again.
My mate had an SP2 it was wrote off in crash he got t-boned a ****** car driver pulled out in front of him.
As the others said get the bike run in yet, your not using the bike to its full potential yet. When you do you sill a differnce as roll the throttle and pick up the reves.
The best thing you can do is take a bike safe course when you have ran the bike and got a few miles under belt, i did mine at about 1000 miles.
I want to do the advanced test, though I'm thinking of holding back, becasue if I want do it at work is a far better course and a hell of lot of fun!
Take time get know your bike first, it does get better. I'm very the same about not wanting a mark on the bike! I fell off a while back to aviod a crash I was very ****ed off at the the car driver that casued, it scared me a bit as well! take it easy have fun, do more training and get know and love your bike. They do look awesome don't they:thumleft::smt046 last time I filled up someone was lke I really like your bike it looks good:-D
