View Full Version : Bristol Meal & Drinks - Saturday 8th December

mac99
24-10-07, 04:00 PM
Hi All.

In addition to the various Welsh and South Coast soirées, there will also be a Bristol evening, to be held in beautiful & chic Clifton Village.

Plan is:
Start with a curry in The Brunel Raj, Waterloo Street at 7:00 . Then around the corner to The Mall for drinks, possibly staying there for the evening, possibly have a look at some of the other nice pubs in the area.

I've made a tentative reservation with the curry house, but would like to confirm numbers as soon as I can, as we are obviously heading into the Christmas season. So, initially can people please post up here if they are definitely or possibly interested in coming.

I'd like a final list of names & numbers by Saturday 17th November. I may need to ask for a deposit later on, but not at the moment.

If anyone is unable or unwilling to make the meal, then of course please feel free to join us in the pub afterwards.

Technical Details:

Location:

Clifton Village in west Bristol, not far from the Avon Gorge suspension bridge.

The Brunel Raj is on Waterloo Street.
The Mall is on The Mall. (yes I know)

Google Map (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=14791905554713397643,51.455230,-2.620440%3B13486405915841334249,51.456350,-2.621890&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Waterloo+St+%4051.455230,+-2.620440&daddr=The+Mall+%4051.456350,+-2.621890&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=51.457136,-2.619853&sspn=0.019708,0.040169&ie=UTF8&ll=51.459596,-2.615218&spn=0.019707,0.040169&z=15&om=1).

Parking for a car is nigh on impossible in the streets immediately around the venues, but if you look just a bit north of there you should be alright. You can always get parked on the curvy bit of Clifton Down (next to the green bit on the map).

Venue:

The Brunel Raj (http://www.eatanddrink.co.uk/restaurants/Brunel_Raj_Bristol.asp) is a fairly standard curry house. I've been there before and had good food.
Representative selection of prices:
Starters - Onion Bhajee, Samosa, Kebab etc £3.20 to £3.90
Chicken Tikka £7.50
Lamb Rogan Gosht £5.90
Chicken Jalfrezi £6.90
Chicken Biriani £9.50
Rice £2.20
Garlic Nan £2.30

The Mall is a fairly big pub / bar. Lots of other nice pubs around, including the Coronation Tap if there is enough interest from Cider nutters.

Loads just look on the web. Google bed and breakfast or hotels Clifton, loads. You'll be hard pressed to find anything cheapo tho, may have to go futher afield and walk or cab back. Be rammed with students out there as thats the last weekend before end of term.

Just booked my room for the night...:)

Cheapest place I could find in Clifton in walking distance to the curry house and bars was the 'Clifton Hotel ' @ £53.00 for an ensuite single room & breakfast (£43.00 for just the room)

I looked at all options but cheaper places would would have involved the cost of taxi's to and from Clifton so I reckon this is the most cost effective !

A word of WARNING ...Rooms are very scarce in the Clifton area for that Saturday night so I would book somewhere ASAP !!

Look forward to seeing you all soon,

Hi there

Was talking about this with Ben last week, and yep defo up for it still so no worries.

The plan is to meet up with you guys at lunch time and we have been racking our brains to think of something that we could do during the day - that doesn't involve getting shizfaced in the afternoon.

We have come up with the following ideas

Bowling (yawn) :smt088
Hide and seek in Ikea
Tourist tour of Bristol/Bath
Treasure Hunt

Anyway it doesn't have to be any of those, and I guess it depends on the number of people who want to hook up in the afternoon.

Hope this helps !

Thats a bit of an idea. Bowling's a bit of fun, but there is usually a bar and that will end up in a very drunk Squirrel before the night has even begun (but could be made to behave if required). Besides if I go bowling the night usually ends in the fire brigade being called!

I do like a bit of hide and seek and a little treasure but I'll leave it up to you to write your own jokes.

As for the tour oddly I think this could be interesting, yep I grew up in Bristol but there is still parts I've not visited, but as Rich said we would need to check its still running (I have a feeling it won't be).

As another suggestion there is Karting I know there was talk of this before and there is 2 places in Bristol to chose from. Alternatively there is Mini Moto at Halaventon [sic] but considering I'm PUI I'm not about to find the link.

But as always I'm easily suggestable...

The track at Hullavington can be found here (http://www.minimoto.co.uk/index.html) I'm not sure how much and all that but I do know they do an arrive and drive on a Sunday night for £10. But if we are to do this I think we need to decide and book soonish. There is also another one at Cheddar but I don't have a link to that.

Alternatively there are 2 karting tracks in the city. 2 bowling alleys to choose from. 2 lazer quest venues. And I know of 2 climbing centers if you lot are up for that...

Who will be making the decisions and when?

30-11-07, 08:49 AM
For non residents (and residents) you could do a tour of the waterfront, taking in the Great Britain*, Matthew, the little museum of steam engines which is rather good, the Industrial Museum and work you way around finishing at a bar, or take a drink between venues.
* of course this will cost
Or why not go and play in Explore for the afternoon @Bristol. Good fun if you have never been. Again will cost but no more than a few beers.

Sorry to sound like a boring old g*t .... But I for one will be a bit knackerd from work so was thinking more of wandering around Clifton village and chilling ... I think there are plenty of places for a coffee & a chat.

As Rich said I think the waterfront is not too far away .. might be worth a look .

Of course there are all the other suggestions that peeps might like to have a go at :) but I think the evening will fly by and sometimes once you get out in the evening you dont really get the chance to have a chat .

Sorry again if I sound a bit boring ...must be my age :D

Some advice for the night.

1. Dont let mac drink - not a pretty sight.

2. Keep stretchie away from any bar staff.

3. Please please dont let squirell dance. unless you need light bulbs screwing in.

4. Keep hovis away from any childrens ride on toys.

5. Dont let Caz use proper cutlery. he will only break it.

6. Dont let DrRich on the waterfront. he will only find a deck chair, put a knotted hankercheif on his head and sleep all night.

7. Dont let vickster have any beans, hot curry or sprouts. The invasion of the valleys lot will tell you why.

Other than that have a bloody good time. Make sure you take some piccys :D

Well that was a bit of fun wasn't it...

I really feel for the ScooterMan that took us home. I think I asked the poor dude every single biking question possible, but we did warn him that it would be a car of bikers (whats the collective for that by the way?). Got to say though his bikes fantastic, he had it striped down and in the boot in under 5 minutes, the engineering that went into the headstock and the captive bearings will have me amused for some time. Yes I know simple things.

So here it is:

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s216/squirrel_hunters_photos/09122007014.jpg

Is a bit of a crap photo, should really read the manual for me phone.

Now for the fun (creative license) part guess the forum member:

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s216/squirrel_hunters_photos/09122007016.jpg

That was taken on the way home from breakfast. I wasn't the only one taking a photo so decided to photograph the photographer:

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s216/squirrel_hunters_photos/09122007017.jpg

Well thats it from me. Same time next year?

He said he used to be a courier. So I guess it's preferable to that. Probably OK, except for drunk people asking "Is that the 50, 75 or 90 cc?" "How fast is it?" "Are they captive bearings on the headstock?".

Then at some point I think I picked a fight with you and we went outside and it was raining and then you picked me up and carried me inside. Or was I imagining that?

No ...You did not imagine him carrying you back in the pub ...I think he had you in a bear hug and all you could do was squeak !!! ...

I was quite concerned for your well being but then I had to go and look for my beer !!
