The Prophet of Climate Change: James Lovelock
One of the most eminent scientists of our time says that global warming is irreversible — and that more than 6 billion people will perish by the end of the century

Nothing is irreversible, it just depends on how far it swings. Might get another ice-age, might all suffocate, but nature will win through in the end. Until the sun blows up.

When it gets hot people say it's global warming, when it gets cold people say global warming, when it rains hard people say global warming, when it gets very windy people say global warming, when.... Ok, i'm boring myself now..

Perhaps he just means that almost everybody alive today will be dead in 93 years time. Doesn't seem that controversial.
EDIT.
And Filipe beat me to it of course.
Oh well ill be dead anyway prob by 2050 so ill get my big bag of bothered out again.
I am also in the army should be relativly safe from any civil uprising as a government department we would still be looked after , plus they would need us to control you riotus mob.
and thirdly, the planet has been warming and cooling on its own for billions of years, it just happens that this time we are at a stage where we are aware what is happening and why, so everyone is panaking a bit. We have helped speed it up for sure, but as one of the theorys is that when the Gulf stream stops the next ice age comes i think that that wil cool things down a bit again.

If the theories are correct, and we are responsible for this warming stuff, then wiping out 6 billion human beings should solve the problem nicely.
It's one of those solutions the politicians cant put in their manifesto,so nature has to do it for them.:D

I'm allright, Jack
I don't believe in global warming personally.
I'm alright, Jack
Damm right, just like i havea full NBC suit and respirator as well so i am safe in a bio or chemical attack!!

Didn't you stay in last night..?
I'm not going to vote as in 93 years time it won't really matter much.

Having read all of his Gaia books I'm of the opinion that he's right!
It is time for us to really look at the problem as it stands.
There are too many people on this planet.
Too many people = not enough space for natural growth of the green stuff.
Too many people = more and more natural vegitation being removed for farming. More cow/pigs etc = more methane = more CO2 gasses = hotter planet.
Hotter planet = more extreme weather, climate shift, spreading of the desert areas, shrinking forests and grasslands, raised sea levels.
The above effects = Migration north and south for the human population, even less space for us and food production, worldwide food shortages, unrest, riots and possibly war.
End result = Dramatic drop in worldwide population.
To be honest, looking at how we continue to destroy forests, use up all the natural resources and generally abuse the environment (myself included) and having read various books and papers by respected scientists, we probably deserve what is coming.
For too long we have done nothing and ignored the advice of the people who know what is happening. Now the "Green" agenda is everywhere, TV, radio, newspapers, movies and government policies. TOO LATE!
As a believer in the Gaia Theory there only seems to be one outcome no matter what we do.
The Earth is moving, once again into a "hot phase". It has happened before and will happen again. We are just going to have to deal with it just as life managed to deal with it before. Eventually the planet will move back to a "cooler phase" (Not nessecarily an ice age) and start to reverse the damage we have done. The planet is in a constant flux of heating and cooling. All we have done is help the heating arrive faster.
One of that things that J Lovelock endorses is nuclear power. Clean, safe (now) and relatively ecomomic compared to oil/coal power. He also said that he woud be happy to bury 1 years worth of waste uranium in a concrete casing in his back garden. He said that he would wrap the case in water pipes and use the heat to supply all of his hot water and heating.
If you are interested in what the planet is doing and a slightly scary look into the future go and read through his web site.

So I'm not mad!
Jester I agree with you.
We're screwed and nothing is being done about it.

I'm one of those oddballs, both an environmentalist and supporter of nuclear power- at the moment it's one of the best options open to us. It's a method we jumped into before we knew what the hell we were doing, to be honest, but we're getting the hang of it, it makes little sense to judge new reactors by 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl, or the mismanagement of Dounreay. Burning coal releases more radiation than nuclear power :-s
Funnily enough William Golding, the actual inventor of the Gaia theory, used it for a science fiction novel and laughed when it was taken seriously. But if you can stay away from hippy nonsense it's a pretty logical idea.

Golding is a close personal friend of Lovelocks, he advised him on the name for his superorganism theory.
War, famine, pestilence and death will increase until the Bishops agree to open Joanna Southcott's box.
(she was around long before that parvenu Lovelock.....)

If have never understood why we dont have more Nuclear power stations, i mean they are a lot safer nowadays, and the waste, well just fire it off into space.
does that mean we should have nuclear cars?? I bet it would mean safer drivers?? :p

Sorry, but I don't see the link between her and Lovelock.
She was a highly religious woman who claimed to have written some prophecies which are now sealed in a box, (whereabouts unknown!), whereas Lovelock is a respected scientist with theories based on fact.
Calling him a parvenu is like calling Steven Hawkins a parvenu compared to Boudica! No link between them at all!!?

It's called sardonic humour.....the thread title is similar to a poster and media campaign I remember from the 60s/70s, when Joanna Southcott's acolytes promised us all war, famine, death and pestilence unless someone opened her box.
It's the same old story: from Nostradamus to Mother Shipton, mass suicides in the Phillipines to Private Fraser in Dad's Army: "We're all doomed!!"
Funnily enough, we're all still here......

I wanted to add the bit about all those clever computer chappies (pronounced 'two-ats') who promised nuclear armageddon when the clocks rolled into the new millennium.......but there may be too many on this site who would perhaps take offence. :D
That's part of the problem with the way they predict global warming, it's based on a computer model where they might have one or two missing permutations.
You realise this when they all acted so surprised about the melting Arctic sea ice recently.

"One or two" permutations would be giving them more credit than they deserve.
Until there's a computer model that accurately takes everything (including those all important butterflies) into account then all we've got are guesses. And when someones research funding depends on whipping up publicity, I don't consider climate scientists guesses particularly impartial.
That's why I follow Locelock's ideas, he doesn't give a toss for publicity or accolades. He missed the Nobel prize for the ozone layer hole, probably already working on something else.
