Some number calls me last night and then hangs up, i , as i normally would ring it back to find out who it was....It keeps bloody ringing, same happens again this morning, oh look the number starts with 070 arghhhhhhhhh!!!!

That's why I don't call ANYONE back ... if they are a legitimate caller AND they are THAT desperate to get hold of you, then they will call you back. Otherwise ... STUFF 'EM! ;-)
EDIT: should have said ... "That's why I don't call ANYONE back whose number I do not recognise" ;-)
common scam that one.........because you ring back without them asking you too they can get away with it

someone's always out to try and take ya money:(
I never ever call back anyone. Not unless they have left me a nice cheap number to call and explained who they are. My phone will always go to voicemail if I don't answer. If they don't leave a message I don't call.

This sort of rip off could easily be stopped,as could the quasi respectable practice where otherwise reputable outfits make you call them on relatively expensive tarrifs.
The telecoms regulator could require all providers to insert a warning when any call is dialled on any phone outlining the rate at which it will be charged.
No one will then be surprised when their bill says they spent £1 a minute when they thought the call was part of their inclusive free allowance.
Not likely to happen in rip off Britain though.

I don't understand - How did you get billed for that if the number just kept ringing? If they didn't answer you can't be charged...can you?

At a guess, I'd say it did answer. Then all he was listening to was a recording of a phone ringing. The longer they listen to the phone ringing, the more they have to pay :?:

That's how I'd do it if I was setting it up. Rather easy to do.
The other thing is having worked with a couple of IP phone systems you can pick the call up and put it in a queue, as far as BT is concerned you've connected so you're being charged, but you haven't been put through to an extension so the IP phone system carries on playing you a ringing noise....
