What have I done??!

Ever get that feeling you should maybe have just left well alone?

I'm in the midst of fitting twin headlights and mini-indicators (front only; back was done before I bought it) to my curvy SV. The std headlight has a lot of the bikes wiring behind it so I've had to drag that back and stow it between the airbox and the frame underneath the tank.

All was going well and the new lights are fitted and work. The mini indicators were the beginning of the problem. They're 10W as compared to the 21W stds that came off and when I test wired them in (ie not soldered at this point) they don't flash at all but the indicator light on the panel flashes like crazy.

I phoned the shop I bought them from and was told I'll need to fit a resistor in parallel to make up for the 11W drop (might have been nice to have been told this before buying them but that's another story). So that's tomorrows job: although I see motrax do a "flash it" indicator relay which may be better?

So the problem: the bloody alarm keeps going off. Datatool sys3. When I arm it with the blipper the indicators don't flash like they should, even with the old fronts reconnected, and immediately after arming it goes off.... again and again. It does eventually give up but I've clearly cocked something up in the proceedings http://www.visordown.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif

I assume the alarm going off is linked to the fact that it no longer flashes the indicators. Any idea how an electrical numpty such as myself might go about remedying this cluster****? Dodgy connection? Where to start?

Now this is an odd un. I've got a Datatool Sys3 on my bike and have had no problems with the alarm arming with the indicators not connected. So if you have tried it with the originals back on it would tend to suggest something else.

The problem is electrical faults are the worst to remedy. I would look at the fuses first including the alarm fuse and the main fuse, not just the ones on top of the battery. But I would expect these to be fine as I'm presuming that you have electricity around the bike elsewhere. Also as you'll be down with the battery check the connection to it.

After that I would look toward the front loom. If you have pushed it back chances are that something has come loose or disconnected. Check all of the connectors as well as the condition of the wires as you may have nipped something getting the wiring back under the bike as there is not alot of room under the tank.

With the original indys connected they work fine so there's no problem with current so I doubt it'll be a fuse. Thinking about connections I did stumble upon a 2 into 1 connection upstream of the indicators- I wasn't sure what it was for at the the time but on reflection that was probably the wire to the alarm. I guess that'll be the first place to look- once the sun comes up!

Cool at least thats sorted.

However whenever a fuse blows its always a good idea to have a little root around to see if you can find anything. Chances are it was just one of those things but take a look at the wiring on the left hand side of the subframe as this is a known weak spot, the bolt securing the little black panel can rub through. Also check the other side as this may have occurred here to depending on how the alarm wires were routed on installation.
