If you don't have many tools, this is a great little stater toolkit that will do many of the tasks required on a bike ... only thing it really needs is a 17 and 19mm spanner (for some reason they put 15 and 16mm in there). But the adjustable goes out to ~19.5 mm so will do both ...

Its a tenner for all that lot, so don't expect it to be Snap-On quality, but if you have nothing, I think it is a great little VFM set and man enough for most little jobs you will encounter!!! 8) Lets face it, if you are into hardcore spannering then you probably have an array of better tools already anyway so the fact you can't undo a 55mm 300ftlb nut with this kit doesn't matter!! ;)

I liked mine so much I bought 3 sets!! :D One to keep with my Kart gear (already proved ideal for that), one to keep in the car and one to keep at work (sometimes I need to fettle my bike when I get to work - this way I have tools at home and at work 8)).

I have been using one on my kart and its a great little kit ... sure it isn't top-quality, but if you are undoing stuff like calipers, front spindles, seats, bodywork, tank, you don't need any more as ... well them bolts/fasteners are not that tight ...

Like I said, if you have a full compliment already, its of limited use to you, if you have nothing, its a great little starter set!!! 8)

Don't knock cheap tools, not all cheap tools are crap. I have a set of spanners I bought for about £3 in 1981 and they are still going strong. I was a professional mechanic from 1982 to 1989 and have carried on using them since.

I used to know a sales agent for Snap-On and a lot of their stuff really was crap back in the 80's. He was forever replacing ratchets and small spanners with the mechanics he sold to as they were always breaking.

At least with Snap-On you get a lifetime guarentee but you end up spending a lifetime paying for them.

Halfords Profesional tools are very good now, and you also get the same lifetime guarentee...

but yes for a £10er thats a pretty good deal.

Steady on mate - the man has a good point. I've got a fair collection of good 'uns, but Like Blue says - If you don't have anything, it'll get you going or get a few jobs done. Then if you find it's your kind of thing, buy decent versions of the most used pieces and work up from there.

Anyone found a use for an adjustable spanner apart from rounding off bolt heads and a slimline hammer for hard-to-reach places?

Still reckon Aldi/Lidl is the place to go to pick stuff up as I picked up a couple of sets for under a tenner all in and theyre really good pieces

Id like to get a really good quality socket and ratchet set so might look for one. A torque wrench also would be a good addition (saves using me dads)

Remembered this thread when other half dragged me round town and bought one. Like it says good buy and £20 in the catalogue so 1/2 price. Can never find a hammer when you need one, and its a lot cheaper/easier than tidying up the garage and putting the spanners and sockets back where they belong. Get one now before they hike up the price.

Wouldn't rely on a set like this for use in the garage, Suzuki bolts are made of cheese already and don't need any more excuses to round off. And a set like this will break screwdriver bits, twist alan keys, etc easily and the socket ratchet mechanism probably won't last long (can you tell I speak from experience of cheap tools?). In the middle of a job when you don't have another of whatever has just broken, on a Sunday night, and the bike you to need to ride to work the next morning is still in pieces, it leaves you wishing you'd spent more money.

It is still a good deal though given what you get for a tenner, especially as if you say you've got nothing, though if buying 3 IMHO you'd have been better putting the money towards a better set.

If I pass an Argos I might buy one to put in the hall cupboard. If it's easy to find it'll save my wife running off with and loosing my decent tools from the garage every time she wants to measure for curtains, hang a picture or fix a kitchen cupboard hinge.

Adjustable spanners are great useful tools but only if you buy the decent ones. cheap ones dont hold the jaws parallel very well when you are trying to undo that tight as they come bolt where as good ones do.

Adjustables is all i use at work and have 3 sets so can undo everything from 5mm nuts up to huge 40mm nuts that i have to stand on the spanner to get it to turn. Never broken a set yet.

In absence of another correct 2nd spanner, I find them useful to hold the head of a bolt whilst I undo the nut with the correct spanner ...

I already have ‘decent’ tool, I bought 3 of these as like your hallway cupboard, I have a few places I want to have tools ‘handy’. (Car for if I need tools there on the run, it’s a great little set for my kart and finally one for at work so if I need to fettle the bike in the bike sheds I have an array of tools).

They are cheap, but they are not THAT bad … I’ve used the allen keys with spanners on the end to get more leverage, they didn’t bend or round …

I agree, but have you seen the BATTERY OPERATED one here (http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/p-70734-black-&-decker-a7150-8%22-autowrench.asp) from Black & Decker £27.95

Another vote for Halfords Professional - they're excellent quality - as an example, ratchet ring spanners in my set get some proper abuse, and yet are excellent even now.

And did you also notice that you can get a real good one for a pound less from the same people?

Cheak adjustables are the biggest problem and perhaps worst tools on the market. Now, good quality, finely engineered ones - that's different.
