There's an old fashioned toy. Its a lamp, and on the lampshade there are parts cut out. When the lampshade spins, the light comes through the cut outs and makes it look like, for example, a horse galloping. What the hell is the thing called? Does anyone know?

Not quite, with the Zoetrope, you look into the slits to see the animation. With the magic turny twisty light thingy, the light comes out of the thingy and projects it onto a wall.

I think what you're thinking of is a version of either a praxiniscope or a magic lantern zoetrope

See further down the page on the zoetrope link above for the magic lantern variety, or here: http://animatedcartoons.blogspot.com/ for a description of the praxiniscope

'Course, the kids toys probably had slightly zippier names than that...
