Just thought I would share this with you all. These have gone up at the exit of all stations. Makes me cringe personally.

Have people stopped wearing seatbelts due to using mobile phones?

Why? Surely you don't think that it would be a good idea to remain attached to your bike in the event of an accident??

I thought some guy challenged that in court.... Did he win?
As Uncle Jimmy said, "Clunk Click every trip." then he did an ad for british rail, NO SEAT BELTS THEN EHH !
Pete, whats the view on a single police officer giving chase in a panda car using the radio whilst driving?
Or Lorry drivers and CB radio's

I really don't see what the problem is - it's just a sign that reminds drivers of the law, that's all.

The law is "drive whilst using a handheld mobile phone"
The Tetra radios are not mobile phones, although they can be used as one. Our policy is to use the radio "in a safe manner" and not to use the phone function when driving.
Most vehicles now have an in-car set with a transmit button on the gear stick for single person operation.

But we're talking about the nation's elite drivers here, certainly in terms of adhereing to the law, and about the most basic of laws. Do you have a reminder notice to read every time you take your bike out of the garage "Don't forget to wear a helmet!" :?:
For the avoidance of doubt this was posted by BoysinBluePete, talking about his works carpark!

I must have even less imagination than you then! (I know, was just trying a play on words on your name)

Ok - I saw the word 'stations' in the original post & didn't make the connection with Police Station - I was thinking petrol / railway etc - & was under the impression that it was there to remind us, the general public of the law.
I don't suppose you could replace it with one that says :-
"2 wheels good", "4 wheels bad"
could you ?

Chuckle, love it :D You'd have to do the deed tho, I'm not brave enough to go vandalise police station signage :D (though as a yoof, we did plant some "special" seeds in the flower tubs outside our local, but the tubs got removed before we could see the fruit of our horticultural expertise, summit about the IRA blowing up flower pots or something).
On the original signage, I can understand the reminder to be honest, a lot of folks (myself included) get wound up by a perceived (and it's worth a moderate stress on the word "perceived") double standard, one rule for "them", and another for "us" sort of thing. Though I'd have thought the Hawaii 5-0 would have some sort of special dispensation against the seatbelts thing? Don't you have to leap out of cars and chase guys carrying bags marked "swag" from time to time?
On wearing seatbelts for the rest of us. Tough, do it. All the time. I don't care if you don't like it. If not for your benefit, then do it for the benefit of the eight year old that instead of getting to see a car crash into a lampost now gets to see your ugly mug, now detached from your shoulders, crash through your windscreen, splatter down the road and land at his feet, you selfish little shi*ts....
I'm a liberal, I don't like the state telling me what to do, but I'm also a pragmatist, and have a sense of social responsibility. Sometimes the state tells you what to do, and sometimes they're actually right to do so. You don't think that the completely innocent guy you crash into the back of and die because you weren't wearing a seat belt isn't going to think about that and feel guilty every day for the rest of their lives? I used to work at Railtrack, I met a couple of drivers (and I was led to believe that something like 1 in 4 drivers go through the same situation) that have "killed" people who were drunk/suicidal/larking around on the track. From the outside, the blame lies entirely with the deceased, but I tell you - to those drivers, they know they killed that person, they did it, they are responsible and think about it and feel guilt about it every single day.
So wear your seatbelt, and wear your bike lid.

Just thought I'd add. This didn't happen to me. But what did happen was the exact same car crash and a great dane dog flew through the windscreen. A *lot* of blood. And a *lot* of unidentifiable red chunks. And a couple of big chunks still pumping more blood. And one of the big chunks did roll, tongue hanging out. It certainly didn't screw me up for life, but it did a helluva lot more than a couple of nights of nightmares, the rather gruesome image is still all too vivid in my memory.
Sorry, I just turned a funny thread into a Halloween thread....
Do I get a treat now?

Knowing a policeman who lived through a crash while on a shout, I would say they have to arrive alive in order to be able to jump out & catch the said swag bag carrier, so I would say they should be the first to belt up!

As a Police dude, I do not have to wear a seat belt whilst at work.
However, I always do, after all, I've seen first hand the aftermath of head-windscreen interfaces many times.
I never understand why people don't, especially cops, It appears that body armour makes them invincible. I promise you, it doesn't.
The first pic just made me smile a bit, nanny state watching the watchers.

Sorry for the derail (oh the pun)but why should a train driver feel guilt because someone stood in front of his train and killed themselves?I know the aftermath of such events isnt pretty, and have seen it myself, but if I was the driver I would have no feelings of guilt at all.Am I odd?

would this be on a stakeout, outside the pier on a Sat night
Look out for the scary starey eyes, loads in there

Everyone wears a seatbelt in my car. Regardless who they are. Although an adult in a passenger seat is responsible for their own inaction, I still think it is the drivers responsibility to ensure that all his passengers are safe. So everyone who rides in the car whilst I am driving wears a seatbelt. End of.
I assume you have not seen that advert on the TV where a mum has an accident and young teenage son in the back goes flying forward and head buts his mum. Result being a death when no one went anywhere near a window or windscreen? Very good advert for passengers to belt up.

just to add to all this. i read somewhere that you don't have to wear your seatbelt when going in reverse? anyone know about that?
i got a ticket for no seatbelt about a year back. i'm sure the cop didn't have his on either. why was it again police don't have to but us mortals do?
Bluepete
03-11-07, 05:02 PM
No belt during reversing is correct.
Cops have a dispensation from the Home Secretary, we don't have to by law, but GMP policy is that we should. My view is, unless you are tougher than the steering wheel and windscreen, then you should.
