Why are DVDs so bloody hard to burn?
I've just wasted 4 dual layer ones (at around £1 each)
they are recognised as 8gb CD-r first, then it starts 'writing' for about a second before saying it's the wrong type of media.
When i try the second time it is recognised as a dvd and writes 100% (about 45 mins) before returning another error :(
So irritating!
Anyone want a coaster?!

I was just doing it at 1x
Loads of websites say try different media but if it says it should work -correct me if i'm wrong- but I would expect it to bloody work!
It's a mac yeah, but I think they've got panasonic drives in them.

They sound like the RICOH JPN D01 I was trying the other day, the first layer burns just fine, second comes out crap, if at all, no matter how slow and what burner I use them in. Try getting some Verbatim media just to rule out the bad media possibility.

it's £25 for 10 verbatim!
I can get them to burn 100%, it's just the finishing bit that gets buggered up.
I think I'll send them back tbh.

I agree with Filly, you have just wasted £4 when you could actually burn your data perfectly onto a £2.50 Verbatim. ;)

Tescos only had expensive TDK, but i'll give them a go

I know they were cheap - but they should still work. I've just bought a cheap iron too, i expect it to at least switch on.

Worth shopping around for deals though. I recently picked up 25 4.7GB Verbatim DVD-RWs for about £8-£9 from Currys. Work a treat too.

TDKs didn't work either :( some line in line out error at the very last second

TDKs are not the best DVDs out there at the moment, I don't have any dual layer here to try but I wouldn't be surprised if it came from the same factory as the other ones you were trying before (I'm still betting on a RicohJPN D01 MID code). Verbatim is still the only way to go with dual layers for the time being (real MKM or MCC media, can't remember what their MID code is from the top of my head).

On top of that, the drives that come with Apple computers aren't always the best out there, and dual layer burning is still a very hit-and-miss subject... who would say, after all dual layer burners have been around for almost 3 years now...

Yes, I'm a certified CD / DVD Freak, so what?!

It just strikes me as bizarre they can sell this product when it isn't guaranteed to work. It should state what will and won't work on the packet so you know before you buy. Apparently a firmware update would do it. Pity that Apple don't offer one...
