View Full Version : Rolex and the Brits.

Rather interesting little piece on one of the Spanish news programmes last night. It stated that there were more Rolex watches reported lost or stolen on the Costa del Sol every year by British visitors, than the Swiss maker produces each year!
This raised a few questions in my mind:
1.Do so many Brits actually own Rolex watches?
2.Do Brits consider Rolex as the ultimate in wrist wear?(Apart from handcuffs of course but that is another story!;))
3.Are people counting in their cheap fake Rolex watches and trying to put them across as the genuine item?
4.Are British holiday makers just down right lying a*seholes?

I assume that you do not have intimate knowledge of the Costa del Sol? Yes there are areas that would attract perhaps the kind of people that you allude to. But there are many lovely places and property that would make your eyes pop.
There are more well healed foreigners purchasing villas on the Costa del Sol than anywhere else in europe. People with the cash to spend like they have can choose to buy anywhere, so please dont get carried away with generalistions.

I inserted that line though to prompt a Mrs.Merton like "heated debate".;)
hmm its a fraud, if i was claming for a watch it would be for a more expensive one.
so its fake claims, we are all liars and cheats!

Just checked and mine is still on my wrist
Funny thing that every genuine Rolex has a reg.mark that is listed to the rightful owner and this reg.no SHOULD be checked every time it is taken for repair or battery replacement. My insurance asked for this reg.no.so its even more amazing that they can get away with the insurance fraud

It was a massive sweeping generalisation! :thumleft:
I'm sure there are lovely parts of it, I'd imagine most of it is stunning until about 10pm! Those holidaying brits make me so proud ;)
Are all of the Brits moving over there pushing the locals out of the property market?

You can keep your Rolex, Tag Heuer, etc...
The only one for me is the Omega Speedmaster Professional - "Flight Qualified by NASA for all manned apace missions"
The original, and still the best watch worn on the moon. I love the fact that I have to wind it every morning, that the face is made of synthetic quartz which can scratch but not shatter (in case I'm ever caught in a zero-gravity environment), I love the fact that the watch is nowhere near as accurate as the chronograph, but most of all, I like the fact that from more than three inches away, probably only about 1 person in a thousand would actually recognise it.
Timex you mofos!
Come the revolution you'll know what time it is!

Oh please. Rolex. So 80's.
I have been lusting after a longines masters collection watch for at least 3 years now, having tried one on at the airport. The model I want is an automatic with a clear back. Lovely it is too, and quite cheap in comparison to the market (high end watches), these start at £1200.

Now, if only I could bring myself to stop being a miser and part with the cash.

I'd have thought for that money you could buy a whole watch:).
As for Rolex being 80's that is true, bought mine 82 God thats 25years ago.
Must have been rich or/and stupid then because I could buy a good Citizen for what a service costs nowadays.
Always looked on it as an investment, which it is turning into as it is now worth more than what I bought it for.
Old fashioned, yes, but a handy bit of collateral for an emergency

Rolex,
Every chav has one. I have a Longines, solid gold case and strap, diamond encrusted. OK it is now old. bought in 1980, but still works well and far to stylish and valuable to wear to the costas. If only it had maintained its value. First insurance estimate was £12,000. Last year only £2,000.
Guess nobody wants an old watch

Jeez-----I'm now the worlds oldest chav:D:D:D
Then again I like old Porsches, older women, and old age pension,[Saves having to work for a living]
Had one many years ago - bad time and butt ugly = pointless and I didn't recognise any value other than poser value!!
Friend of mine has two which he bought as investments to hand down one each to his two kids. By his admission they both keep crap time. IMHO both look ugly and unimpressive.

I wear the Cartier only for appearances in truth. My fave is my good old faithful Timex.;)
In my defence the Cartier is only a Pasha.

Cant beat the Sun for an estimate on time of the day. I havent worn watches since I was a kid. I like the clean and simple scandinavian design of my Sony Ericsson ph for accurate time keeping.

But does anyone know of a good watchmaker who can fix the time/date changer as it came off in the other month... only had it serviced (£300 some new parts needed)2 years ago and that cost £0.00 a rich arab gave it to me when I fixed his car in Sandhurst...;-)
