How do you alter the standard suspension on a sv curvy so that its stiffer at front and back? I have no idea about preload or anything so from the basics lol

Unless you have a K2 model curvey then you can't do anything with the front suspension at all. the only adjustment on the pre K2's is rear preload.
If it were me and you were struggling then I'd invest a bit of money in some replacement springs and oil and get the bike setup properly for your weight
have a search theres plenty of threads on the subject.

You can only stiffen the suspension by fitting stiffer springs. Pre-load doesn't change the spring stiffness, it just pre-compresses the spring which adjusts the amount of sag when you sit on the bike. Plenty of previous threads on this subject

lol...i got so confused with pre-load, setting sag etc etc i was recommended a chap off LB, a former racer that now sets up suspension for a living, he sorted my bike out for me, feels much better, theres only so much you can do with an SV tho, its no gixxa!
still it feels much better than before.
check him out on LB or teh net, BN race science:smt040

For anyone interested in the basics(and i guess the complexities) of suspension, there is a good article in Decembers 'RIDE' magazine.
It covers all the basic terms and the effects adjusting them will have on the bike. It also has some more in depth stuff from the pro's, concerning setting them up and potential effects of the bikes age/mileage on setting up the suspension.
It really is worth reading, its inspired me to start tweaking a few things to get the most out of my bike.

+1
But not many of the things in that article are applicable to the SV due to the el-cheaparse forks.
