Demoing a Z1000SX and ZZR1400 at Seastar on Saturday....if the ride and price is right the Ktm will be traded in against the 1000cc sports tourer I think....

The ZZR1400 would be too heavy for a Mr Punyverse like me, but I did look at the sx1000 in Orwells a while back.

Ditch that 'orrible exhaust though

One thing I want is a bike with panniers not wider than the bars for filtering...the z since 2014 has that....the zzr14 ain't gonna filter well I don't think but had to get a demo in ;)

Already eyeing up the after market cans :)

That's pre 2014....

here's what I mean:

http://31.222.134.33/imagestream/841...0_FFFFFF_H.jpg

The photo perspective doesn't help which is why I need to go have a proper look but you can see that the panniers are much better moulded into the bike design unlike the pic you posted from a pre-2014 z1000sx

When the panniers are not fitted you wouldn't know they can be fitted....

Was thinking more the scorpion pipes :)
The Mrs likes the look of the Green ZX when we spotted it at the London Bike show.
Her favorite bike I used to own were the ZZR's we had back in the 90's!
But they were Black and red back then.
But as she staunchly refuses to get back on a Bike.(Shes got a full Bike license) .
I only need the Tigger

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Well I test rode the Z1000SX and a Versys 1000 today, the Z1000 was first and although it had some umpphh it proved too sporty position wise and I couldn't see myself doing long rides on it without wrist/back strain etc, I guess I've ridden upright with the SMT for too long :) I then tried the Versys and it was so much better comfort wise (to be expected) and was actually not bad when giving it some either. But when I got back on my KTM I was happier with it's position and grunt.

I will change the SMT before the end of the season I think but I am still thinking I need an adventure style bike to replace it with, but maybe with shaft drive and knowing that panniers just don't work for the commute at all....It'll either be a BMW GS or Triumph Explorer I suspect....next test ride needs to be a GS and an explorer on the same day then I'll be looking at finance deals / ex-demos for a September switch...

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Problems with Adventure bikes and Hi Level exhaust systems makes for Fat arsed Bikes & rubbish filtering.
People get upperty when you fold in door mirrors.
But try them all the BMW'sl RS ( pillon seat looks a bit hard though).
KTM 1190?
And just for fun the yam tracer !
Its motors a hoot .!

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

I either go the way of a shaft drive and get either the gs or Explorer....or I stick with a chain and then the s1000xr looks like an awesome ride!

Explorer globebuster on the cards, waiting for details on finance and trade-in....

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Have you checked out the panniers.
Some of the 800 guys have used a lop sided rack to ballance the hi exhaust system. Or use a tool tube or similar to use the wasted space.

kaivalagi 06-06-15 05:39 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

TBH I'll not be using the panniers for most things...only when away for more than a week or with the Mrs...

There's plenty or strap points and it comes with a dry bag

I've given up on the idea of hard panniers for commutes, it doesn't work well no matter how wide they are...

Still not 100% sure yet...may go s/h yet...

Second hand ones that have low mileage are pretty hard to find.
How did you get on pushing it around.

kaivalagi 06-06-15 06:31 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

I've ridden the Explorer twice so far, very smooth and easy to be honest, I'm used to the geometry too....bit heavy when off the bike but once moving no worries. Flickerable compared to the Rocket :)

Very very comfy!

They have a few s/h bikes 2 years old and under 8k miles...but the price may not be low enough to sway me from new...

NTECUK 06-06-15 06:47 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Yep they hold their money well.
Nice bike.
Shame it's too heavy for me as I could flat foot Ongar's Explorer but not the 800 one!!
But thats why I orderd the lower seat for my 800.

I've opted for a Triumph Explorer (cast wheeled) in white...getting free panniers, heated grips and seat and first service...gonna be a long couple of weeks...

The Ktm is cleaned and prep'ed for trade-in and ain't gonna be ridden until I take it to them...not gonna risk it lol

NTECUK 13-06-15 05:58 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Good deal.
I got £500 off and that's all.
But it's because I couldn't wait till the hubbub of the new one died out.

I've only just got my low seat this week.

What colour you plump for?
White
After market exhaust!?
I've got a Fuel Diablo on the 800.
Much nicer ;)

That white is really nice, good metallic flecks. Just before the new regs so things thrown in...they have June targets to meet

All this talk of new bikes makes me want one! Although I haven't ridden the one I have got much this year..! lol

Booked a track evening on 29th June with No-Limits if anyone else is up for it? My father-in-law is doing his very first time on track at 62 years of age on a Bandit 1200 - should be fun :)

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Well the new toy is home and it's so effortless to ride, the running in is torture though! First 100 miles < 3.5K RPM then < 5K RPM for a while longer still....need to get past the first 100 tomorrow so I can keep with motorway traffic on Monday lol....so much for running at varied revs all the time too, kinda hard on the motorway, might need a detour or three...

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Tiger800xrx run in
First 20 miles full throttle and rapid shut off.
Bed them rings home.
Next 280 miles measured acceleration. Mixed up the revs.
300 changed oil.
Maprill Meat Run.
Steady acceleration up to 3/4 throttle.
600 service.
Then ride sensible until it freed off.
1000 up. Goes well with no oil consumed since the 600 service 1800 miles in.
Still with the bias belt front and the PR 4 to go on.
Hopefully your get more ground clearance on the Explorer!!
Need to book mine in to MCT to get the front suspension tuned though

kaivalagi 20-06-15 07:55 AM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Yep I know about that breakin process, did it with the Ktm and still needed quite a bit of oil lol

I'm sticking to the letter on this one, it's a shaft drive so I figure the run in is as much for that too...first service is already booked for next Friday, won't be long

I'm ringing bikesure in a mo as it looks like my updated insurance documents are the original ones...could have rode home with no insurance last night!
edit: bike was insured, just rubbish process to provide detailing immediately...

It's quite difficult to give a 1200 the beans and keep your licence to be honest ;)
Now your running it in you can get the rockets wheels powder coated
.

White Explorer (Cast) with free Panniers, heated grips and seat :)

Cruise control is good and it has ABS / traction control too...

Yeah, what I found on the demo rides I did was that it was so smooth and effortless for the bike to get to high speeds (i.e. 130+) I had no idea I was going soooo fast....something I need to remember!

I love the way the thing corners, it's as good as the KTM for normal road riding....once I get used to it proper and have run it in I am sure I wont be disappointed...I put the cruise control on at 60mph through the b roads on the way home in 6th gear and managed all the corners without a worry, first time riding it so I'd say that's a capable and confidence inspiring bike right there

I want to wait until I need to replace the back (and front this time around) tyres on the rocket, when that time comes it's powder coating time for sure! Might even be ramair filter, rear hagon nitro's and progressive front springs time too by then....

Luurvely, I do wish they could find an alternative to stickers on the tank.

NTECUK 20-06-15 09:03 AM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

I peeled the stickers off the day I got mine
It's a shame that they dropped the gold forks on the 800.
Cruise control...
I'm a bit on the fence.
I find it too easy to hit a bump and roll the throttle back.
But your suspension is lots better than the xrx. So you probably just float over the bumps
How's the hero blobs surviving so far!!!

kaivalagi 20-06-15 03:34 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

I'm liking the cruise control, for the motorway it'll be ace, accelerate past the set speed then let off and it settles on it again...brake below and it turns off.

Labels will be coming off soon...I need to find a power lead for the garmin mount first before Monday...

Loads of spare tyre not scrubbed yet, no chance of getting the pegs grounded on this lol

I got a din lead plug to go on a car twin adaptor.
Amazon next day.
There's straight adapters if you hunt about.
Most though are angled. That's not so good as it gets in the way

I'm thinking if the hella socket fitted on the bike has spades connected I can make a splitter lead to accommodate it and the garmin spades...just got to figure out what to take off to get to it lol

NTECUK 20-06-15 09:04 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

I bought a double USB socket

Not got round to fitting it though.

But my tomtom battery last 5~6 hours it's not been a issue.
Just used the side plug and charged it under the seat.
I have though fitted my Fuel end can. (Baffle fits under the seat ;))
Engine bars and low seat

kaivalagi 20-06-15 09:48 PM

Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread

Nice, we need a Tiger outing ;)

Fitted the Garmin ram mount to the center of the bars and wired it using a bit of old low amp AC wire, 2 male spades and 2 female, between the Garmin leads and the power socket...the plastic surround the power socket fits into is easy to get off and quite spacious underneath...enough to take all 2 meters of Garmin cables anyway...

Thought I'd buggered it until I realised I'd blown the 10A fuse for the socket by touching the spades before connecting by mistake....it's on all the time not switched, which is fine

Oddly enough last Sunday we took a bimble up to Bressingham.
Found some interesting roads. Green bits down the middle.
Matey on the zzr1400 was less than impressed lol
