I have short nails but I tend to bite the skin down the sides of the nails... its like a self canabalizing thing...

Stop and Grow... paint on nail thing doesn't work as you can get used to the taste of mankeyness...

Superdrug sell a couple of products to strengthen weak nails and encourage them to grow. They aren't horrendously expensive either.

yep I do that too and then that leads to more problems

Stop and Grow is the stuff I have and whereas I can get used to it, it still isn't pleasant as it stays on the lips :?

Does anyone else have this irritating habit? I know it's a really bad one and unfortunately I have it something chronic, it's getting to me now

I managed to get up to 9 grown nails before Christmas - a first I might add - then exams came and pure boredom, so now I have none :(

I've tried that nasty tasting stuff that can be put on them but it just makes everything else taste foul...I've tried to use nail polish (on what's left of them anyway ) but I end up nibbling that off as well . Someone suggested black nail polish (I only use clear) but I can't stand coloured polish.

It annoys a mate of mine so much she prods/forces my hand away when she catches me doing it which worked for a bit, but I think I'm becoming immune to that now...

Once I can see the nails starting to grow I tend to leave them alone but it's just getting to that stage that's difficult! I usually have quite a lot of will-power but I seem to have none where my nails are concerned. You'd think once I'd bitten them so far down it hurts that I'd stop there, but not always the case :?

Can anybody suggest any alternative methods to stop me nibbling? 8-[

I was a terrible nail biter... every time i got a bit stressed i`d start taking it out on my nails. I found the solution that works for me is once they`ve grown a bit and are starting to look quite nice get along to a nail place have them filed and french manicured then have a thin layer of acrylic put over them. Not the acrylic/gel nails but just a thin layer of acrylic... they look so nice when they`re done you won`t want to bite them. I have to go back every 3 weeks and have the acrylic filled where they`ve grown but its a small price to pay for having nice nails.

That sounds a good idea, but can imagine it costs a bit! Will bear it in mind though, never really thought about manicures, never seemed much point, seeing as I'd probably end up wrecking them after a few days

Oh and cheers Lissa, might need to fork out for something decent like that. Honestly these nails are more trouble than they're worth!

Isn`t too expensive for the acrylic but it would need doing every few weeks depending on how fast your nails grow. If you can`t afford the acrylic just get regular manicures done. It`s amazing how once they look nice you lose the urge to have a chew. Good luck :D

I do this occasionally too - apparently it can be a symptom of a vitamin deficiency (thanks to an episode of CSI for that snippet of information ) but fot the life of me I can't remember which vitamin...

... could be 'C'.

One thing that always stops me biting mine is the thought of what is under them. Just look around when you go out and about, touching the door handles, toilet seats, and other things that all those chavvy, unclean people have been mauling.
They don't wash after using the loo, or picking their noses or scratching their fat, sweaty arses and have left bits of themselves all over the thing you have just touched.

I hate having dirt under my nails and always bought my new probationers (when I was a tutor constable) a pump action bottle of antibacterial handwash. As far as I know, most still use it years later.

So that's my tip. Become paranoid about hygiene like me!

Claire, it's seven years of Moston and Harpurhey that did it. It would make a syphalitic tramp with leprosy shudder.
