For women, February 29th can be a very successful day as once every four years on the 29th February they have the “right” to propose to a man.

The right of every women to propose on 29th February each leap year goes back hundreds of years when the leap year day had no recognition in English law (the day was 'leapt over' and ignored, hence the term 'leap year'). It was decided that the day had no legal status, meaning that a break in tradition on this day was acceptable.

So on this day women can take advantage of this anomaly and propose to the man they wish to marry.

And from across the length and breadth of the land comes the sound of slamming doors and rapidly retreating feet:D

Does the legal position still stand ????

Does it apply to speeding and parking on double yellow lines?

...and if you turn them down, you're obligated to provide a gift ranging from a pair of gloves, right up to a silk dress in order to preserve your honour.

Last time I was asked I foolishly said yes. That went downhill soon afterwards... Still, I didn't have to buy her a pair of gloves :D

my mate gordons gf proposed to him today and he said yes. well done to them both (not that they will read this)

so did any girlies take the opportunity to make a proposition (I mean marriage).

I think its a great idea but dont see why it has to be today (calm down DD). saw a bit on gmtv and I was affronted for the woman. she went to her bfs work and proposed and he shrugged and said yeah ok, I would have hit him.

There was a woman on GMTV this morning who had planned a secret proposal live on TV at her partner's work.

She got all over-emotional, and he looked stunned and definitely not that enthusiastic!! He did say yes tho I guess you'd kinda feel that you have to when there's a camera pointing at your face and all your colleagues are gathered around...

Ooops!
