To be fair consistent clutch drag/rear brake use is what you need for slow control. To blip the throttle you have to be off/on the power, I cant see how blipping the throttle could possibly help slow control other than giving inconsistant power surges and instability.

It was a tip that I read (or was told) a long time ago. It really does work and allows you to ride slower than you can with just clutch & rear brake. When I had a big Harley in the 1990's, I could ride it far slower than walking pace by blipping the throttle (no jokes about that being top speed, please).

I've no idea why it works, just that it does. It might be something to do with the gyroscopic effect of the flywheel.

I blip my throttle for the same reasons as the OP on downchanges. You get a much smoother down change and upset the bike much less this way.

WRT blipping the throttle at low speed, this is how I was taught low speed control. This needs to be rapid blipping and I found it did not work to well on the SV so went for the constant throttle / drag rear brake / slip clutch method, which works well for me.

I do it on all down changes. Not sure it helps a great deal if it helps at all, but sounds good and it makes me feel even better so I do it. I am not sure there is any evidence that it actually works?

Of course theres evidence[-X If you have the engine speed at the right rpm you can change gear without even using the clutch. Thats essentialy what your achieving by blipping the throttle as well.

I wont go into any massive details explaining it because I cant type correctly at the best of times.

Also if you're downchanging to use the engine braking, so anything above maybe 3k rpm. Shifting without blipping gives some nasty noises.

I don't like nasty noises.

I used to do this a lot on my Raleigh Grifter. Made a hell of a difference.
