Well in engineering you tend to find spherical balls of hardened material used to reduce friction and wear in rotating components, they tend to be made of either hardened steel or ceramic.

See here a caged type bearing race. You can clearly see the balls inside and the cage which keeps them in place.

Also BB can refer to the small plastic projectiles used in airsoft guns.
