If your pillion isn't comfortable with using the rail then they can use the tank to push against when you brake, that is assuming you don't mind them having their arms around you. Grab rail can kill the wrists after a while with all the braking, I swear my right arm muscles were bigger than my left for a while :-). If your pillion can quickly get used to your method of riding, then hopefully just by gripping with the knees will suffice. This is the best way in my opinion as you flow more with the bike and rider.
