I don't trust anyone except me. Dealers who insist on working behind closed doors make me especially nervous!

Not especially. I was a bit surprised when trying to stop on the way out of their car park to find that they hadn't even brought the pads back into contact with the disks...took a right few pumps on the pedal before I came to a halt.

Anyway I've checked the front sprocket now too and it's right so guess everything must be OK. Just a bit surprised I've got less chain adjustment left now than I had before it was changed.

Usually a chain is knackered well before it gets to full adjustment.

Last one I had was on naked with I think a 47 or 48 tooth rear sprocket and 2 extra links in chain, so it was same, not on furthest forward spot on swingarm. But when it was dead it was only 2 or 3 markers further back than when it started, but was proper knackered. (over 1mm of play in some of the links!)

If its the right chain with the right sprockets perhaps your bike has the wrong swingarm fitted? On the curvy the S has a 1cm shorter swingarm than the N model and I think the pointy is the same.Maybe you have an S swingarm in your bike.
Having said that I would suggest fitting a scottoiler meaning that you will never need to adjust the chain and it wont matter if theres not much adjustment available.
