Re: Power Commanders?

I guess a PC may behave differently on different bikes depending on how they were set up in the first place. My Honda uses (slightly) more fuel since having it fitted but this may be due to the extra smoothness letting me get on the throttle sooner out of corners so I'm using more gas more often. I also got rid of the Lambda (the cat was already removed) so will no longer experiend the closed loop lean off at cruise (which just seemed to make the bike surge and hunt). Whatever, I think the difference is worth paying the price for.

Lambda ?

Lambda ?

A sensor that basically "smells" the emissions and tells the ECU if its over fuelling etc.

so how do you disable it?

Re: Power Commanders?

Basically unplug it. It will throw a fault code and default to the richer map then, but then it may use more fuel...

Why would you want to disable the closed loop setup if you don't have specific issue as merlin427 had?

lambda is the greek letter commonly used in front of the chemical equation for combustion. A lambda of 1 means enough fuel is present to completely burn all the air. But in this case it means a lambda sensor, which gives a certain voltage at stoichiometric mixture. The ECU senses this and adjusts the map to suit. Generally only ever at steady state such as cruise or perhaps tickover.

The question is are u a track day nut or do u want a more torquey engine for round town?
There are hundreds of programmes to choose from or u get a good tuner to customise it to your specs, but its all pointless unless u fit a race pipe and filter to increase the air flow

U may get better fuel economy, u will definately get better use from your fuel, ie more torque or power

To be honest most places that know what they are doing don't tune for a certain fuel air ratio but max power, which is obviously the optimum A/F mix for that engine. That is really the only way to get an engine running well, as Chris says. The engine pulls in a certain amount of air. Not giving it the right fuel for the air pull is just daft.

What a power commander does that people seem less interested in is tune each throttle position for all revs. So you might have a stock bike that at max throttle runs near perfect but under 10% throttle runs crappy and so to you have to run with more throttle to get the same performance a well fuelled engine will get at 10% throttle. By making all throttle positions fuelled right your engine shouldn't need as much throttle to produce the required power... So you should see am improvement in fuel economy simply because you use less throttle hence less fuel.

Hope that makes sense...

I did not know that - thats very interesting to read :salut:

Unplugging it gives an error (I believe) as YC said, part of the PC setup removes this issue.

I removed it mainly because I did have a (slight) issue when on a constant throttle, particularly at the kind of RPM I tend to use when in 30 limits, but also because I don't really see the benefit of closed loop apart from slightly improved economy when on a constant throttle (I don't believe closed loop is any use - perhaps not even operative - during throttle transitions) where it gave me more trouble than benefit, may have been OK for motorway cruising. I don't believe CL has any benefit for performance.

I was very specific when I got the bike mapped that I was interested in throttle response NOT max power. I don't see the point in max power WOT figures, how much time does anyone spend there? And more to the point how much time do I spend there? (I'm not really interested in anyone else!) And the answer is not much (probably none). So now I run no CAT, no Lambda and have nice smooth delivery which suits me just fine.

Well said! I aint got mine custom mapped yet (not even fitted it...) but when I do I hope to get a dual map (one per cylinder) to try and get the throttle transitions as smooth as possible :) Not sure where local does it though so I guess I might have to settle for single map
