Re: skerries 100 road race
A lot of folks reckon Skerries is the pick of the road racing over here in Ireland. When I was over in the Isle of Man I got chatting to a local who said he comes over every year and would NEVER miss it. And that from a chap living in the mecca of road racing!!
The nice thing about skerries is how close you are to the action. First time I went I was hanging out of a tree so that the bikes were pretty much flying by under me!! Probabaly a bit more difficult nowadays with Health and Safety and all that...but yer still right in there. Great atmosphere as well - both at the racing itself and down the local afterwards. You wont be disappointed - its great craic!! Road racing is for the toughest, hardest racers only. Not too sure whether those guys are brave or just plain crazy. Margin for error is so tiny, and the consequences are quite often deadly. I think road racing has a finite life in modern times - there's been more and more calls for its removal in recent times. Those who do it are totally passionate about it though - and I think that's why it's still alive. Makes MotoGP and WSB look like a walk in the park. Especially when you see what these guys do with such tiny budgets and resources to work with. |
Re: skerries 100 road race
From memory the last road race on the UK mainland was at New Brighton in the early eighties. I'm not certain as to why they're no longer held, as I recall there's no actual law against using closed roads for racing, in the case of New Brighton I think the local authority withdrew their support and facilities.
Anyway, road racing is fantastic and everyone should go. |

You can try to pass a private act of parliament but its a lot of work and hassle. 12 Motor racing on public ways (1) A person who promotes or takes part in a race or trial of speed between motor vehicles on a public way is guilty of an offence. (2) In this section “public way” means, in England and Wales, a public highway and, in Scotland, a public road. 13 Regulation of motoring events on public ways (1) A person who promotes or takes part in a competition or trial (other than a race or trial of speed) involving the use of motor vehicles on a public way is guilty of an offence unless the competition or trial— (a) is authorised, and (b) is conducted in accordance with any conditions imposed, by or under regulations under this section. (2) The Secretary of State may by regulations authorise, or provide for authorising, the holding of competitions or trials (other than races or trials of speed) involving the use of motor vehicles on public ways either— (a) generally, or (b) as regards any area, or as regards any class or description of competition or trial or any particular competition or trial, subject to such conditions, including conditions requiring the payment of fees, as may be imposed by or under the regulations. (3) Regulations under this section may— (a) prescribe the procedure to be followed, and the particulars to be given, in connection with applications for authorisation under the regulations, and (b) make different provision for different classes or descriptions of competition or trial. (4) In this section “public way” means, in England and Wales, a public highway and, in Scotland, a public road. |
