Re: SV running lean, or rich.

Spark plugs should be a "biscuity" kind of colour, I don't mean Bourbons......

If it's black with HEAVY build up of soot in exhaust and with an exhaust blow, It sounds like it's running with too much fuel to air ratio.

If it was White, then not enough fuel to air ratio.

As it has a leak in the system, you can't be accurate with how to interpret the exhaust soot/colour/deposits.

Personally, I'd like to see Black/Dark grey colouration in the exhaust to know the fueling is about right.

But it is best to check the plugs.

My cans had black on the spout of the can for years. It has many carb balances and spark plug checks. If it runs right, and everything that has been checked is ok, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As for the fuel to air ratio that Speedy goes on about, you can't really get much more air in there from a butchered filter for more flow ;-)

What is this back pressure you speak of?

Bar the end can staining, that's why!

But what it actually does is let the back pressure show where the leaks are.

As the gases want to find the easy way out, or a lack of any exhaust at all!

Except a BMC race, or race RS, or pods, or open velocity stacks, or flatslides...

well of course, just using it as an example.;)
Even so, plenty of air circulating, and as you know cause you've done it, no problemo with too much fuel to air, and my cans got more black in the end than Santas suit after a jump in a chimney!

Could be worse, he could have it spitting out of the can over his Missus white washing....now who could possibly have ever done that:rolleyes:

Well it's something that if you didn't have the gases would not show any leaks at all in the pipes.

They would find the quickest way out and that's not out of the leaks in your pipes!

That's through no can at all!

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick.....

I meant, that if there is not enough petrol going into the cylinders then there is too much air.

The amount of air entering the cylinders is governed by capacity of the engines cylinder, the air-filters etc can affect the SPEED at which it can be drawn into the engine. And if there is a restriction in the intake, (ie blocked filter), then the volume of air going in will also be reduced per rpm. Resulting in a petrol-rich burn.

Pictures!

The joins

Doesnt look as bad in the pictures actually. But its a little blacker than it shows. This anything to worry about?
