Re: K5 - not starting
Not checked yet, the first thing to do was see if it would fire. When I get chance to get to my old man's, I'll be checking the plugs etc. Just thought that with the speedo not showing anything it might be a fault that someone has seen before. I don't get any of the whirring/clicking when the ignition is initially switched on, just the normal lights and a speedo with no digits ....no CHEC or anything.

Re: K5 - not starting
So you’re fuel pump is not priming either?
Fuses would be my first port of call closely followed by 'working' the ignition switch, could be some corrosion on the contacts in there. |
Re: K5 - not starting
injectors don't gum up like carbs, and it does not really matter if you change oil when engine is cold as modern oils dont form sludge in the sump like oils did 20 years ago and with lower viscosity oils used today it will run out of the sump hot or cold

Re: K5 - not starting
OK - update time.
Here's what the dash looks like when the ignition is on..... http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...bylad/dash.jpg When you turn the ignition on, there is no speedo/odometer displayed and there is no 'clicking/whirring' like you normally get. The ignition will turn over, but won't fire and there is no spark at the plugs (have checked both HT leads too - front one is a MARE to get off!). So I'm thinking there is some problem with the ECU on account of the lack of display and 'clicking/whirring'. Have checked the voltage across the orange/green and black/white cables on the loom side of the ECU connecter (as per Haynes manual) and there is 12v. Is my ECU screwed? What other checks can I do to try and isolate the fault(s)? Thanks in advance for any ideas and Merry Chrimbo to all. EDIT: have checked all main fuses too. |
Re: K5 - not starting
I'd say it may be worth getting a scrap ECU or pass it to a mechanic.
You tried getting it into dealer mode? |

Re: K5 - not starting
I think I had the same probelm on my K5. Check the fuses. One kills the display like you describe and is a cheap fix if it is!
It's under the seat. Pete ;) |
Re: K5 - not starting
Also check that the battery is propely connected, as in both terminals are tight. Its worth checking as I found out once, I connected the battery up correctly no more problems.

Re: K5 - not starting
Checked all the fuses again for continuity and then started checking all the connections. Lifted up the loom underneath the fusebox and viola!
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ylad/wires.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...lad/wires2.jpg So...just need to decide the best option for repairing...strip back some of the loom sheathing, then bullet connector or crimp? I guess it wouldn't hurt to figure out why it's fubarred also...looks like it's blown/melted as opposed to worn/chafed.. |
