it was cold when i checked it, just washed it and happened to spot it was rather low.

i was being pernickity and washing inbetween the truss's on the frame =]
i shall head out tomorrow and purchase some of the sweetest coolant nectar there is haha

also, i was unawares of this side of things on the bike right now as ive had no coolant issues but i suppose its the sort of thing that will just pop up and go "BOO!" and overheat like mother-muffin.

You say you are looking next to the seat, through the frame.

OK it is a long time since I have had an SV, and supped a fair few beers since. But I thought the expansion tank for the coolant was underneath the fairing up front, nowhere near the seat.

when you say next to the seat, is it in front or behind. If behind is it not the rear brake reservoir?

like just down the side, almost underneath the seat really, but down in left hand side when sat on, behind the truss's region

That's the coolant expansion tank all right. rear brake reservoir is small cube like thing on RHS of bike, behind the line of the seat.

mmmmmmmm only two things i can think that would be there are rear brake res (thought that was on the right) or poss scott oiler,

BE AWARE!!

Some Anti-freeze types cannot be mixed with another type....they turn into a gunge/jelly....then catastrophe.

Or for that little bit just use distilled water, you could always buy your coolant from Suzuki?

You will need a small funnel (2-3" across at the top) and the top of the expansion tank is under the fuel tank, you do not need to remove the fuel tank, although that would make access much easier I did mine with the tank raised, you will see the black rubber bung. It is also worth having the radiator cap off for a look while you have a bottle of coolant in your hand, do this with the bike on its side stand.

Because you'r bike is a S you still have to be aware that it could still have a lock screw on the radiator cap, my K6 S has one that needed a cross point screwdriver.
