Slacken the cable adjusters so the cable doesn't interfere with the movement of the lifter arm. Now try to move the arm up and down as the cable would when you pull the lever, if it moves more than a few millimetres then it's certainly worn.

Of course how worn is too worn? As a very rough guesstimate I'd say if it moves more than 5-7 mm without pushing the rod then it's probably too far gone to be reliably adjusted - but I've seen worse being used.

Put the adjustment back as it should be, and don't be tempted to overtighten the adjustment in attempt to make it work if the lifter is worn, overtight adjustment can cause excessive wear of the other parts of the lifter mechanism and clutch itself.

Tried this yesterday and found there was about 5-7mm of movement so adjuster is probably on the wear limit, then adjusted back 1/8 th of a turn and set clutch lever with just the smallest amount of free play, just enough to be sure there be no tension on the adjuster, dropped another small amount of engine oil so level was slightly below the half way mark on the glass and then went out for a spin to Squires (which was packed out due to it being the MCN night) and found the clutch to be much improved, virtually no binding, although this was a nice steady run with very little gear shifting and clutch work, the real test is usually in urban riding with lots of heat and gear shifting

Hi Longway

Have you managed to sort out your problem with the front brakes?. I have exactly the same problem-very low speed it feels very much like a kind of lots/little/lots/little braking action (interesting when you want to come to a smooth stop!)

On a previous bike i had a warped disk this (braking action) felt very similar but with added lever pulsation which is not present on the sv, so i am hoping this time its not warped disks just something cheaper/simpler!

I had the calipers stripped and cleaned to help it through the mot (failed for an other reason) this has not helped.

If i manage to get them sorted out i will post what done the trick.

Not specific to SV's but I have experienced low speed "grabbing" on other bikes which was due to only part of the disc being glazed, the other part had slight corrosion marking caused by not using bike after a good wash ! Apparantly rust has a different coefficient of friction compared to a clean disc . The simple remedy was to deglaze entire disc area with some very fine wet and dry. NOTE, the brakes don't work so good for a few miles. I'm not recommending the above, It's just what I've done in the past and it works for me, Fraser

Cheers Fraser. I shall start with trying that. Paul
