Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
I’ve done 15 thousand miles ( of the 21 thou on the clock ) and nearly 20 trackdays on my SZ and it’s been brilliant. Things to check as already mentioned are the clutch slave cylinder leak, rear exaust gasket ( at the joint with the collector, not the head ) and check the green connector under the airbox for burning on higher mileage bikes, especially if the ignition switch is a bit temperamental.
I’ve never had poor fuel economy on the road and get 55 mpg easily if I use it on my 90 mile round trip commute on mostly motorways at about 85 mph average. Handling is very good. Stable and nimble enough for track use. Have a look at the video. My thou comes in at about 3 ½ minuites behind the silver GSXR1000, past that then through to the end and is following a CBR600RR5. It’s on it’s original suspension with the only concession to the track being the Gilies Rear Sets because I was destroying my boots. Tyres are Michelin PP 2CT’s and are very long lasting. I replaced the OEM chain at 17K. And that’s it. Valves were in limits at 15K. Youtube vid Hope this helps. |
Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
I would ensure you test ride one first. Having rideen big capacity bikes for the past 20 years (all around 1,000cc) I was certain the SV1000 would be perfect. Rode one and just didn't like it at all. Found another and rode that and again just didn't like it. Reluctantly decided to try a 650 and found it to be a real delight. Engine is much sweeter, revs so freely and the light weight is a real revelation. Sometimes think I miss the bigger engine but then just wind the little 650 on and it is amasing just how well it goes.

Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
I've owned two 650's and three thou's - just taken delivery of a new (to me) one with the GSXR USD fork conversion.
Needless to say I love the 1000N - It's a great mix of power, handling and comfort - I've not had to spend that much on it either - always been reiliable - although it only gets summer use so not used in all weathers. If you want razor sharp modern sportsbike handling then maybe consider something else - when I ride my SV it always makes me grin and in the summer I sometimes find myself riding all day - I love it. My 03 N model is for sale in standard trim for £2K.:D |
Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
Hmm, certainly a mixed bag there. TBH I'm not a quick rider by any stretch of the imagination, so I really dont need a perfect handling beast. I'm currently overloading the suspension on my curvy 650 and wobbling about on it yet still enjoying it.:D
I dont really need any more power than the 650 has either but, well, you know how it is, sometimes its just good to have more even if you dont actually need it.;) Not in a position to buy at present as I'd have to sell my 650 and my Tmax to buy one really. So it'll probably be later in the year if I go for one. Reading the replies on here and about them in general, I think my only concern is how cramped the S version would be and if it does have any weather protection from the fairing? My naked Sv has been a nightmare in this really cold weather with its complete lack of protection. As I'd be using the thou all year round and wouldn't have the super comfy motorised armchair Tmax with all its weather protection I'd probably have to go for the S version? The other thing is just how vibey are they? My 650 numbs my fingers at certain revs and gets on my nerves at times. I gather the thou is more vibey than the 650? |
Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
I've never found vibes a problem on mine - I've ridden all day and only had minor hand buzz after.
In terms of weather protection - you could go for the S and get the upright bar conversion giving you hopefully the best of both - or a naked with a big screen ! |
Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
so good ive got 2 :)
ive stuck the naked yokes and drz bars on the s with a double bubble screen and some lowering plates and its comfy as , great for being a lazy git too picks up in any gear cracking torque, vibey not that ive noticed id say better than my old 650 sports bike well no its not, comfy cruser that can do silly speed if required yes, track day tool it holds its own well (untill you throw it down the runway ,my fault not the bikes) defo test ride one , see if its want you want and if you fit it, im 6"8 and with the plates on and the naked bars its wonderful, its a bike to ride fairly fast for long distance and do some far twisties, if you names rossi get something else, if you want a cheap allround bike that does everything reasonably well its money well spent point of note, hear one with good aftermarket cans on it ,sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet :) |
Re: Any of you owned/ridden an SV1000?
Just a note,i dont know what you have done to your curvy since you got her, but last season i used to get a buzz from the right hand grip and right hand footpeg that got uncomfortable on the motorway. After i adjusted my valve clearances last month and balanced my carbs the bad vibes went away. My engine is running soooo smooth now.

+1 on the lack/minimal vibes - ride mine all day without noticing anything. The fairing on the S does a good job of deflecting wind off your hands, I use summer gloves just about all the time.
