Re: SV650S starter relay clicking.

I had this exact same problem with my old honda cg. I just took the starter out, connected it to another battery to make sure it was working then I put it back and everything was fine :)

Re: SV650S starter relay clicking.

Ok, some more information, which I'm pretty sure links into my other thread:

http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.p...52#post2681552

I took the starter motor out, tested it, was working fine. I then decided to see if it was still working fine off the starter button so replaced the starter, removed the starter clutch so the starter could spin without any resistance, and it span fine on a press of the starter button.

I then rebuilt everything and tried to jump start the bike, and all that happened was the solenoid clicked as before, so I tried to bump start it.

25mph, 2nd gear, dropped the clutch and was treated to a loud, rapid, clicking/clunking noise which sounded to me like it was coming from the starter motor.

I honestly don't even know if the starter motor is involved in a bump start, however to me it sounded like the starter motor was coming up against too much resistance and skipping, which would indicate to me that something major has gone within the engine!

Can anybody please try and shed some more light on this.

Thanks.

Might be worth taking out the spark plugs and see if you can turn the engine over by hand.

EDIT: I just had a look at the other thread you linked to - you're right, that might well be relevant. :( There were a few good suggestions for things to check on that other thread - did you manage to get around to checking any of them?

I'd still try gently turning the engine over at the crank to see if there's any resistance but I think it's also worth taking the valve covers off and double checking the timing anyway, if you haven't already done so.

How would I turn the engine over by hand?

I'm guessing I would take the alternator cover off and turn it using the bolt that holds the alternator rotor in place?

TamSV, as far as I can tell there are only two suggestions in that thread, check the cam chain tensioners and pull the clutch fully in while the engine is running.

I have removed & checked both cam chain tensioners and they were both perfectly fine, and I obviously can do the clutch in test because I can't get the bike started!

I've also taken the clutch apart to check that there is nothing wrong with it and there doesn't appear to be any real wear to any part of it, also can't see how that would cause the symptoms that I'm currently getting.

Basically, yes. You don't need to take the cover off, just remove the access plug in the middle of the cover (10mm Allen key) and you can then get a 17mm socket on the rotor nut. Turn it slowly anti-clockwise. With the spark plugs out it should turn easily.

One other thing, did you hold the CCTs back in the fully retracted position when you refitted them?

Yep, I made a tool like the one on this page:

http://www.sv650.org/camten/cam%20ch...tenstioner.htm

to keep the CCT retracted while I put it back in.

Ok, the saga continues.

I took the alternator cover off (the socket wrench I have doesn't fit through the access plug) and turned the engine over a few times, seemed to be turning over just fine. Took the bike outside and had a flick up and down the gears while rolling the bike and it seemed to be engaging every gear without a problem. Took it back into the garage, rebuilt the starter clutch, alternator cover back on, filled her up with oil, hit the starter, started up first time.

As far as I can tell it seemed to be running pretty normally. It did sound a tiny bit rough so I'm going to take the sparkplugs out tomorrow and check them, but it seems to be just about OK.

So, I have absolutely no idea why it seems to have fixed itself. The only thing that I came across which seems odd is that when I took the starter motor off a small stone fell out (about 4mm in diameter), so I'm guessing that it found its way to somewhere it shouldn't have and that was what caused the initial problem, and that the reason the bike wouldn't start up was because that was jamming the starter motor, but that is just a vague guess!
