Don't worry about copper grease getting into the bearings, although jambos mate is correct that it shouldn't be used for rotating stuff.
Wouldn't bearings usually be classified as rotating stuff?

Yes but if it's on the spindle it's in contact with the inner race... and there is no rotation between spindle and inner race unless something has gone very wrong.
