It wouldn't be a legal reason, but most coppers tend to be quite reasonable and would accept it.

i got a few tickets whilst i was waiting for the replacement but nothing came of them. i assume that when there were being processed it came up that i was actually tax'd

Why it is still thought that we need Tax Discs is bizarre!
The fact that the Police have the ANPR vans to snap you & check that you have tax means that it, in theory, would be just as simple to include these details on the Police National Computer so that whenever it is required, an officer can check that a particular vehicle is taxed.
This would save on a lot of costs (of printing tax discs) and would mean that they could not be stolen!
Another point is that surely, a better thing to have a disc to prove you have would be an MoT!? If you don't have an MoT, in theory your vehicle may not be safe to use!
However, we live in a strange country where it is more important to display an easily stolen (and easily forged for general purposes) proof of contribution to the upkeep of the roads, etc. :?

tax can be checked on the pnc quite easily...

but think how much easier it is at the moment being able just to check those without something showing...instead of checking every car on a road to check that they are legal.

i've had disqual drivers put away , and the only way i came across them is the fact they drove near myself and the 'no tax disc' rang alarm bells.

if no one had discs , then so many people would get away with things.... tax discs are good.. yes i'd prefer the money was added to petrol , so those that drove more paid more... but i cant see that happening for years to come.

I've been told (and tried) only covering my licence plate and tax disc when parked on the pavement. Apparently these still count as a motorcycle cover and can't be moved by wardens.

So what about proof of MoT!!??

Not having an MoT is IMHO, worse than not having a tax disc! I mean - if I were to be driving an unroadworthy car, that's a road safety issue as well as a legal issue! Not having tax is purely a legal issue and is not in itself dangerous. Surely it would be better to have an MoT disc rather than a Tax disc!!??

generally , if a car has no tax disc , then you can put money on it that the car has no insurance or mot...

i didnt make the rules.. lol.. not worth getting stressy with me old chap ... just explaining how it is on a day to day basis for the police.

i'd rather there was an 'mot disc' and the road tax was added to petrol prices... but that wont happen as i've said.

Seriously though, It is a serious offence not to have a number plate, according to Leicestershire Plod. They have done me twice for a number plate falling off a trailer.

I worked in Germany and my plates had a stamp which included Strassengebuhr (roadtax) and TUV (mot)

Its not rocket science
