I also have the ticking under the seat problem on my SV, it only happens occaisonaly but is very annoying. I have just looked around for a regulator on ebay and there are a few around.... what do the regulators actually do, sorry if its a noob question..

The regulator is combined with the rectifier in a sealed unit, this takes the three phase alternating output of the generator(alternator), and converts it into Direct Current- regulated to keep the batterycharged. I believe Honda 4 wire ones can be made to fit, the SVs reg/rect is a knpwn weak point, some people have had sucess extending the life of them by fitting cooling fans.

How old is your battery? They don't last forever.
Search my name and regulator/rectifier/charging system checks, lots on here from me.
The regulator rectifier of the SV isn't weak particularly - the vast majority of owners never have any problems with theirs, it is perhaps a little more common with SVs than many bikes though. Anyhoo, fitting a fan does nothing, most of them don't fail so how someone can claim theirs lasted longer with a fan as it most likely wasn't going to fail anyway.

Sounds like mine. Needs a big ride thats what helped mine.

Thing was when it was doin what you are saying mine started then i would have to blip the throttle and hope to god that it would catch the choke, sometimes it would cut out and that would be it. Turn your lights of for when you start it up. This helped mine.
