Re: 3 Services in 9 months!?

Apparently the last thing was a wrench (with socket on the end) found swimming in the oil of someone else's Capri. The owner had been wondering for a while what the clanking noise was at high revs. Didn't seem proportionate to revs, but only happened at higher revs.

So he asked my mate to have a look at it. The look on his face when he came out from under the bonnet clutching it with a "Ah! This is where my wrench dissapeared to!"

Suzuki can refuse warranty if you have done your own servicing. Obviously if its a non service related issue such as corrosion then there may not be a problem. But if your top end goes then it will be.

Have just been trying to put two cases forward last month.

One on a GSXR600 just out of warranty. Throttle body problem. Bike with no service history (owner serviced) they wont goodwill gesture it. They did say if it had full service history by someone trained to work on that bike then they would have paid some towards it.

Another is one with a bent valve. No history again. No warranty. Bike 1 year old and done 25k..mostly track work too. I am sure if he had a full service history there would be no issue.

They quite rightly said - so how do we know he has done the work correctly and understands everything involved in the service?.

Fair dues i suppose.

Not just because i am a dealer..but be wary. I have seen a few mess ups from home servicing. I am fairly competantand i could work out how to balance TB's and do valve clearances - but i still leave that to those that know because i wouldnt want to be finding out i did it wrong!!!!!

I'd love to see Suzuki pull that one on me. I service the full Triumph and Yamaha ranges at work, but do all my own servicing at home. A bike engine is a bike engine, one injection sytem is much like another and an oil and filter change on any bike is roughly a 10 minute job. As long as your spannerman is competent and has the relevant technical information and tools to hand he shouldn't be any worse off than a main dealer's technician.

When I was repping in the bike trade I saw techies from Yam dealerships move to Suzuki, and others go from Ducati to Kawasaki etc. You ain't going to tell me that all of them are fully trained to work on everything they touch as soon as they put on new overalls.

Christ, I really do admire you younger guys for sticking with bikes when the insurance is so crippling. My eldest daughter has a Gixer 600 K6, and even at 26 she's paying something like £550 a year comp, and she has 8 years full NCD. I winced when I found out my insurance as £213 Comp for all four bikes in my sig - I suppose I should count myself lucky that I'm an old ba$tard.
