Re: Tailpacks & camping-can you get everything in it?
For AR07 I used the soft panniers for the clothing (roll everything... don't fold), toiletries, spare (dry) gloves and stuff.
The tent, sleeping bag and bed roll was then bungied onto the back seat. Spare keys, maps, money, mobile phone, visor cleaning stuff, etc was put into the tank bag which can be easily detached to carry with you when stopped at a service station etc. Hope this helps. Edit:- Oh and this year I also wired up a 12v Cigarette lighter socket under the back seat for charging the phone up. |

Re: Tailpacks & camping-can you get everything in it?
I would be genuinely interested to see how people pack their stuff into their bags. I only have a 5 man tent (no good for bike) but would be interested in buying a smaller one for going camping but can never think how to get it all in.
Panniers seem to be the way to go using them for packing clothes and leaving the seat for the tent/mat/sleeping bag. I only have a oxford extending tankbag/tailpack therefore cant think of where to put the tent? The tankbag is annoying when extended on the SV as the tank is higher than some other bikes. Its more like a chin rest at full height! |
Re: Tailpacks & camping-can you get everything in it?
fizzwheels top tip
unpack the tent from its bag & fold it up & fit it in a tailpack. then strap the poles to the bike, i did this for the AR but this weekend in taking panniers with the tent on top |
Re: Tailpacks & camping-can you get everything in it?
I just strap my tent and mat across the bike... Not so easy if you have a pillion mind. You can get a wee titchy backpackers tent, but for me, anything smaller than a 2-man tent is too small for one person  Especially with bike gear and luggage to stash, which is pretty bulky.

Re: Tailpacks & camping-can you get everything in it?
Good advice so far! - methinks a definitive list of stuff and make of equipment you use may be of use, maybe once we get it sorted we could get the thread stickied or even get it put into the main site as a 'tutorial' of some sort.
Would be a good idea if anyone who has their bike packed up ready for the off would give some feedback when they get back on what they used / did not use / wish they took and forgot & maybe even a series of photos of unpacking / packing the stuff onto the bike. - i think the first things to sort our are a good tent, spleeping bag, mat, then some tips on how to secure this to the bike, everything else after that is going to be basic equipment and clothing! |
