[I do belive that prison should be tough places but keeping people locked up all day is going to turn them into animals. Then you get riots and people get killed.

I though the idea of prision is that most prisoners are being rehabilted into hopefully better non-criminal people. Few people are ever held indefinatley

Anyway, bare in mind that the vast majority of prisoners are going to be released eventually. Turning them into angry hate filled lunatics wouldn't help.

This is officially the second time I've ever agreed with Squirrel. It is uncanny.

I'd hoped the little smiley face at the end of my post would have helped to indicate the intended humour of that post. Sadly not. :(

(that one means I am sad my attempt at humour was misinterpreted ;))

Ok - so remand prisoners should be treated differently - no argument from me

Once convicted :-

1) Make use of the manpower - God knows there are plenty of roads that need repairing / ditches that need to be dug etc,etc

or

2) Lock them down with the exception of a couple of hours 'association' a day - most people need human contact to remain sane.

But, remove ALL televisions / VCR's / DVD players etc from both cells & recreation rooms until they have done something to earn this 'treat' !!

Unfortunately, The Human Rights Act probably wouldn't allow any of the above - some scummy lawyer like Cherie Blair would just come along & sue the government whilst 'enlightening' the court as to her client's 'deprived childhood' / 'disfunctional family' / herediatary ingrowing toenail problem etc, etc as if any of these are an excuse.

Bottom line :-

You step outside the law - you forfeit your rights !!

Apparently so. Probably, one of us misunderstood the question though.

Many women are in prison for offences such as non payment of TV licence. Also statistics show that women get longer sentences for some crimes compared with men commiting the same crime. I'm not saying that they shouldn't pay nthe price for their crimes but just trying to illustrate that the criminal justice system isn't always just (someone else has already mentioned prisoners on remand). And don't even get me started on juveniles and people with mental health problems who shouldn't even be there in the first place.

However I am in full agreement with the Prison Officers and think it's criminal that they needed to go to such lengths to get their point across.

However as they have no right to strike, thus making the strike illegal it IS indeed criminal :)
