Some circuits dont like you running with headlights on for some reason. Id suggest using electrical tape as this doesnt make a gluey mess on the headlamp like gaffer tape does. It peels off very easily too.

Thanks for all your answers guys. I think I'm going to leave them on and use a low tack film we have at work for protecting transparencies and A/C skins. Don't fancy over-heating the rectifier because the SV1000 already has a weak connector on the loom which can fail and kills the bike.
