Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, Section 4, Para. 3:

(3) Nothing in these Regulations shall require any lamp or reflector to be fitted between sunrise and sunset to-

(a) a vehicle not fitted with any front or rear position lamp,

If you're not going to use it during lighting up hours or in conditions of severely reduced visibility, you aren't required to have any lamps on the bike at all...

doesn't matter what the regulations say though, a motorcycle with no front or rear position lamp used between sunrise and sunset is exempt from them...

Hmm, when I applied to convert a CRF230F for road use, I was told by VOSA that I needed a horn, speedo and brake light operated by both brakes.

Your advise may vary :)

for a full MOT you will need the brake light operated by both brakes

speedo isn't able to be tested during an MOT so isn't required, but is required to meet C&U

horn is required for MOT and by C&U

honest, this is all from people who convert these things day in, day out:D

The lights rules are ridiculous, as if it's less safe to have a brake light and no headlight than it is to have neither
