I've had a weird front end wobble from my SV for a while now that's been hard to identify. Popped it along to Essential Rubber, who used to be highly recommended on here (not so sure they're worth it any more) and they told me it was worn fork bushes, which seemed rather suspect as a diagnosis.

Absolutely still recommended - what made you think it was suspect?

The one time I was suspicious of them (was the 1st time there)
- they asked if I wanted new rear pads on the SV while they were fitting a new tyre, I said no, well because all these places are just out to rip you off, right?

So, the next day I asked Jambo for his opinion, his response was "better stop using your rear brake, or as well as the pads, we'll have to replace the disks, and those aren't cheap".

I have popped into Essential a number of times with niggly things - once they pulled half a dozen bits of metal out of a rear tyre and to both our surprises, none of them had punctured, must have been about 5 mins of their time if not more by the time they got it on the stand and inspected the whole tyre, not just the nail-head I had seen and didn't ask for a penny for their time, even when I offered.

Without going into any kind of detail, I trust them, and should have done back then, because someone I trust implicitly trusts them, as well as because they have always done well by me.

So please, it's all well and good saying "yay I found someone that I liked working on my bike" but please hold back on the rubbishing of someone else just because 2 opinions on the problem did not match, I have had a similar situation with my bike where I asked two VERY well regarded members of this forum for advice on a problem with my bike and getting it into gear, one said I needed to strip the gearbox and look in there, the other said lube the lever pivot. I did the simple fix by spraying some WD40 on the pivot to see and it cleared the problem, but does that mean that the other person should not be listened to any more, especially when they have given good advice that proved reliable in the past?

Sorry, Nice neck of the woods, but you're even harder to understand than the northern Monkeys:D:D

Cheers.

Good morning all.

Glad to hear you're happy, twas a plasure! At least your first 'lube & tweak' (MATRON) session wasn't too painful on the wallet eh:D

On the subject of Essential rubber. I don't know them personally, but I've heard a variety of things about them, mostly on the positive side.

The problem with such places is that the majority of chaps who work there are first & foremost tyre fitters & not mechanics.
This is not to say their in any way an inferior species, but they simply don't have the experience of someone who works on all aspects of all makes & models.
Obviously a competent tyre fitter will be able to discerne things such as worn pads, & wheel bearings etc But the finer aspects of fault finding will elude them. Hence the diagnosis, in this case, of possible worn fork bushes. The aforementioned lack of experience shows in the fact that fork bushes don't wear out on SV's at 28k. Unless the bike has been in an accident & the fork are bent,

Rantharis bike was indeed handling in a strange way, but there was nothing immediately obvious. It was only when we got the forks off did we detect a minute amount of play in the headstock. I decided to inspect the bearings, for I have seen cases where the bearing cage has split, which could cause the balls not to be concentric with the race. The bearings were fine, but there was absolutely no grease on them, & experience dictates that on such little things does precise handling depend.

Cheers.

Hi Spannerman, our work server just made junk mail of your quote! I was just checking the junk mail folder and I'd found your reply for estimate for repairs on my scooter! So apologies for not responding. Damn thing is really leaking oil now so I'm not sure I get it to you at present.
Best
Dave

Another punter satisfied by Spannerman...

Just a belated thank you and recommendation for Spannerman & Bill for spending time running their well manicured hands over my Gladius for its first proper service and handle bar fit.

Had a very enjoyable day with plenty of man tea, a little ornithology chat and cake – can’t go wrong with that!

Thanks again Chaps.
