Jynx - where did you get the cbr rr reg/rec from? Have been looking around but only ones I can find on ebay seem to be shunt ones.

If the alternator is good but I'm getting the really high idle voltage and really low 5k rpm voltage, then it must be the reg/rec yeah?

And if so is it a RR85 I'm after. I saw on Geodude's thread that TV recommended one from a cbr 600 re.

Yes that sounds like reg rec issue

have got a replacement reg / rec sorted. while I'm waiting for it is there anything I can do with the tach? Can it be taken apart and reset or is it likely stuffed?

It will probably be ok when it has nice voltage going to it.

Replaced the reg/rec, now getting nice voltage - Tach needle still stuck.

Re: Faulty reg/rec, battery, or both?

Pulled the instruments apart and pushed the needle back round, no resistance to pushing it and now it just sits there next to the pin. The voltage going in the back varies as would be expected when the engine is revved, so I'm thinking the original burning smell was probably the tach motor. Realised today that the headlight also blew so presumably there was a spike when the reg/rec failed.

Can the motor be replaced or does the entire tach unit need to be replaced?

Its the entire unit that needs replaced.
Have you checked the cables into the clocks, could be loose

Is it a true naked set of clocks or S clocks?

Just to clarify, is that the entire tach unit to replace, or entire set of clocks? Have checked cables and all seems good.

Proper naked set.

it's just the tacho. They're like rocking horse s*** second hand, to give u advance warning.

Just had to check as the S clocks are on one Pcb.

Cheers mate, will start hunting. On the plus side I'm a lot more aware of how the engine sounds and what gear I'm in now :)
