1930 Austin 7 - press clutch to change up & the 2 middle pistons hit the head. Rings expand to stop them going down again & all hell let lose. One goes through the sump & t'other through crankcase. Hot metal sizzling in a growing pool of oil.
12 miles from home, so crank her up & drive back on the remaining 2 pots!
Replacement engine less than a quid & a pint!
Happy daze!

Sounds the same as my brothers first car, think the colour your on about was called Gazelle beige.

My first car, 1986 Mk2 VW Jetta 1.8CL, in mars red, upgraded it with Audi quattro wheels, GTI suspenders including rear axle (with anti roll bar) GTI seats, steering wheel etc.

Payed £1200, almost a write off twice, repaired myself got £800 when traded in after 2 years of abuse, saw it a week later on side of road in London for £400, was tempted to buy it back!

Yep, I'd have another one for a laugh. Ran on rails with nice predictable understeer if you were pushing it.

Nearly forgot my best mod - Peco straight-through exhaust. BAAAARRRP. :D

Well it aint till you look back at the crap we used to drive that you realize how good the cars are these days,
My first car was a hillman imp(crap, head gasket rust ect) then i got a morris marina(not much better) and that was followed by the first reliable car i owned a mrk 3 cortina 1.3 push rod engine 85mph flat out with wind behind you and down hill, i say reliable, compared to the other 2 but it did rust away very quickly
