Rather than a "spend all your money" or "bigger is always better" perspective, let me show you mine, I went from 142bhp to 50bhp, a far lighter bike, but much more comfortable, I couldn't hold a 200kg+ bike or at least I'd need to limit my riding if I were to try, I have a easy bike to ride and move around, it'll do over 100mph without difficulty, averages between 58-69mpg, got 15k out of the front tyre and nearly 12k out of the rear, I've added the bits I want, so had full hard luggage, video camera mount, 2x12v sockets, heated grips & seat, for a grand investment of just over £2k (Oh and the Race Mivv's sound thunderous ).

But the main thing is I've made bike choices that allow me to ride as much as I want, in as much comfort as I can.

This.

Reading between the lines DT you're thinking practically about the benefits of a smaller newer bike for ease of use as age increases and limiting concerns over reliability. If so I think Mark's perspective is spot on. Sure the new CB for example will not be as good for touring as your current Sprint but if it keeps you riding longer with as much real world pleasure it fits the bill.

Yeh,[lol] Twist and went----------must admit that it didn't last long.
One of the principal reasons I have,or don't want to go below 500cc is that I have realised that performance is important to me.Reliability,weight,comfort, economy and cheap insurance all come into the equasion as to whether I should change or keep what I have and just use the money to further my biking for another couple of years.
The other side of the coin in my thinking is that if in a couple of years time I want to give up I will still be able to get a bit of money back from a newer bike where as the Triumph will be worth peanuts by then-----------not because of its condition but who wants to buy a bike with 60-70k on the clock.
From the beginning I said I was only thinking about it and just wanted other peoples views but I will be doing nothing till I know what is happening on the medical side of things because IF I do have to have the op I will be laid up for 6-8 months and a lot can change in that time.

Yamaha FZ1 fazer 06+ you can get a kitted up one for around 4.5k ,fast very fast you can see 90mph in 1st gear , but its relaxed below 7,000 rpm, 3.5k rpm at 70mph ,160miles from a tank is doable,decent wind protection,good kit and finish is decent, handle well, position is a tad sporty but that could be sorted out very easily,small in size (tiny next to my KTM950sm) very smooth,cheep to run with decent service intervals

I do have the use of a 600 and a 400 Kwak but I would not like to ride them for any distance so sporty is a big NO NO and would be even more so if I have the op.
Please remember I am getting towards the relic age :(

what about a honda nc700x with dtc. Clutchless shifting, full auto or manual too. Loads of mpg and possible storage

The adventure bikes are light. lots to chooses from.long as its got a screen all day 70mph is achievable .

Forget the Dullville, they're horrible, heavy and grossly underpowered.

What about the new Diversion XJ6F? They're supposed to be pretty nice middleweight sport-tourers. Not sure if they're in your price range, but wait a couple of years and used prices will come down.

I haven't ridden one, so can't comment on the comfort.

Tiger 1050? Though they're fairly tall top-heavy bikes. You can fit a lower seat, or get the bike lowered if necessary. I'm 5'10 and only just find it manageable. They're comfy, do-it-all bikes though.
