It is certainly possible for oncoming traffic to trigger a Gatso. In my more devilish moments on the commute home I do it for fun if there's a car in the "zone" on the other side of the road  Mind you, I don't do it so often these days as I'm still feeling guilty about the little old lady in her Metro during the summer. She didn't half jump

Bingo, if you definitely know that you were doing under the limit then don't worry it was almost certainly an on coming vehicle since they can set them off, I do it all the time

However if you aren't sure then they have 14 days to send you the NIP as long as your vehicle is registered to you and was not hired or a company vehicle.

Today is my '14th day', there was nothing in the post this morning but knowing my luck it probably came in the second post :?

Jonny, sounds like you will be ok if your sure you were only doing 27 in a 30. Like the others have said it would be fairly easy to defend if anything does come to it. Also, the camera might just have been playing up.

Jabba, Benji and (anyone else who might know), why can the gatso's be set off by speeding in the other direction like you both have posted about?

Someone can probably better explain or tell me I am COMPLETELY wrong but I think its to do with radar reflection, I don't know the specifics though.

All I know it is harder to do it in the opposite direction the smaller you are, I've only ever really done it on the bike when I've been passing a lorry or something going in my direction at the same time as I pass the gatso, where as in the car I can do it almost every time as long as the camera is loaded.

I think you also have to be going a lot faster than what the gatso is actually set to, to trigger it off, I usually don't see them flash unless I am doing about 50 in a 30 zone..... but it all kinda depends on what is all around the gatso (is it in a tunnel? Is it next to tall buildings or big walls, etc?).

Your speed (for the NIP) is calculated by the number of white dots you cross (one for every 5mph) - so it is possible to trigger the flash and still show below the speed limit!

The flashes are 0.5 seconds apart, so unless you are already braking when the first flash goes you're stuffed. The digital high up ones work on induction loops in the ground at the start of the white lines so you'd have no hope, but you could boot it once past them and be fine I believe.
