Just phoned AOL, spoke with a top guy called "Murphy" who sorted the problem

Turned out it was my router's Maximum Transmission Unit - MTU size - It was set at 1458bytes but once we lowered it to 1400 the connection now works - He said it was quite odd that we needed to go so low but 1400 shouldn't affect our connection speed...

So three cheers for AOL's tech support, once you get through they've always been knowledgeable and helpful for me...

BRB, I'll leave this here for you:

There are four engineers travelling in a car; a mechanical engineer, a chemical engineer, an electrical engineer and a computer engineer. The car breaks down. "Sounds to me as if the pistons have seized. We'll have to strip down the engine before we can get the car working again", says the mechanical engineer. "Well", says the chemical engineer, "it sounded to me as if the fuel might be contaminated. I think we should clear out the fuel system." "I thought it might be an grounding problem", says the electrical engineer, "or maybe a faulty plug lead." They all turn to the computer engineer who has said nothing and say: "Well, what do you think?" "Ummm - perhaps if we all get out of the car and get back in again?"

nice one, lol

I've had nothing but positive experiences from them TBH - the old tales don't hold true these days, even though they've been taken over by Talktalk now we have grandfather rights with AOL and get 8Mbps for £9.99/m - and more importantly, no download limit or FUP

Couldn't be happier with them...

My dealings with them have been less than satisfactory , but I am talking about "Back in the Day" when it used to be normal evening rates and on the old dial up . I ended up on the same deal as you did but had to come away from them as I could no longer play Xbox Live over the AOL framework . I did manage to find a workaround on it using a program called RASPPOE but my Ping times were abhorrent . I eventually binned them and went to BT and the nightmare of trying to remove AOL from my system afterwards led me to format the PC again . I was with them from AOL3 all the way through to 6 and was a Guide for them in that time , then left them and again rejoined them on 9 if I recall rightly . They may have got their act together now but in the past they had left a bad taste in my mouth .

I`m just suspect why the MTU decided to change itself .

That should be set and optimised automatically, strange router you have.

Bonus is i've learnt how to manually find ones optimal mtu size using the ping command, ill remember that for future.

Oh and your ping times seem quite large, that may have something to do with it, blame your isp lol.
