That said if a modern car engine was buggered after 150,000 I'd be disappointed with it, well maintained a modern car engine can run for double that. Cars usually get scrapped as a result of rust, or as a result of poor maintenance causing mechanical problems that are too expensive to repair. I once had a Ford Sierra 1.8TD with 520,000 miles on the clock. The first engine did 300,000, the second was still going strong when I sold it to the mechanic who had maintained it all it's life. It was on it's third gearbox, but that's probably only because it was a taxi for it's first 7 years, and had so many different drivers who didn't care about it. As said a well maintained SV engine should be running sweet at 50k, what you don't know is if it has indeed been well maintained, so as said take someone along who knows what they are looking for. |

Re: Is 50k miles too many?
As most of the above really. Mileage not a problem. £1700 is a dealer price for a '99 bike, under a grand if brought privately I would say. Personally I would drop a couple of years for lower mileage, but that is just me. Mine was 2 owners, '02, under 12k miles for £1100 with some extras already bolted to it. Don't forget all mechanical parts wear, not just the engine, so disks, bearings etc need checking. Also a lot of dealers offer their "own" warranty. These are often limited and you can't take the bike anywhere else to get it fixed. Most do NOT cover wear and tear so, for example, if you find that the front disks need replacing due to being too thin, or the head bearings need replacing, this would not be covered. Be careful.

Re: Is 50k miles too many?
When I sold my curvy and bought a pointy, I took a big risk... The bike was up for £1600 and the guy took £1250.
Its a 53 reg blue pointy with 40k on the clock and service history up to about 12k (cant remember exact mileage). I got it serviced straight away pretty much and its still going like a tank, no faults yet. I made sure I got breakdown cover and off I went. Today I fitted a nice new battery and im looking forward to the summer... Its a great bike and good luck with your search. P.s. I sold a 2002 reg curvy for £1500 with 9k on the clock (I dropped it once and it just had scrapes down one side) so there are bargins to be had! The cheap price because it I wanted a quick sale! |
