Later, life took one of it's turns, and I looked into many 'faiths.' I've looked at Wicca, buddism etc, and quite a few more extreme faiths. My forum ID is Baph, which is short for Baphomet (google it if you're not aware of it). I didn't really look into all this because I was struggling to find the right thing, more for the sake of information.

The last relationship I was in, everyone in the family were devoute christians.

I have a bit of a problem with most Christians. Please note, I'm not attempting to generalise here, but what I'm about to type is certainly true of every christian I've ever met. Christianity lays down certain rules for behaviour, and I've not met a single person who claimed to be Christian, yet lived by those rules. In public they act one way, the way that they believe is expected of them. Behind closed doors, or with people close to them, christian pricipals get dropped quicker than a hot brick!

Personally, I'm atheist. I'm quite happy that when I go there's a whole load of black nothingness. My take on religion is that it's a way to shape societies actions, and comfort them in their last moments. If that's what one person feels they need, they're more than entitled to their belief.

I'm also pretty well known for being able to get into arguments with anyone from any faith. I haven't found a faith yet that doesn't seriously contradict itself. If there is one perticular religion that's right, and the others are wrong, then fine, show me proof. Oh wait, that's the point isn't it, blind faith. Give me a break!

-That would be the problem with Authority thing again then?! ;)

I find the church and christianity (and most other religions) so abhorrent and damaging to our culture that if I did believe in god I would never worship it via one of these devices which to me are relics of an era where the much more impressionable and gullible population needed to be controlled, and there was money and power to be made through telling tales of heaven and hell and making sure people want to book a ticket to the former.

One of my oh so many points on the subject.

Supposing for a second that Christianity is indeed the correct religion, and they've hit the nail on the head.

Every single Christian believes in an omnipitent being. That means they are everywhere, all the time. Yet those same Christians only really practice their faith in one of two places. One, the church, the second, their home (and often limited to the bedroom - praying & such).

The chuch needs funds, and the minister/reverand needs to put food on the table, so "charge" a "voluntary" contribution for the upkeep of the church.

Surely the same effect could be had by taking it in turns to be minister & sitting in the middle of a field somewhere.

Then there's all the American bible belt folks that profess healing abilities of prophets etc. They're doing gods work, but you still have to pay a fee, and the fee is higher than traditional clinical medicine!

i was bought up as a roman catholic, i have 11 years of catholic school behind me and used to go to church every sunday to be honest i think what they have tought me is complete bolax.
i believe there is something, for this purpose i'll call it God.
i think the Church is the most corrupt aspect of the ever changing world, the word God was used as a form of terrorism back in the ages for a very long time. "do as i say or GOD will be angry" and not much has changed,
the church can teach you morals and wellbeing and treat others as you want to be treated and the like, but these are just teachings and are not followed even by church goers. i can feel 100% more spiritual on top of a moutain after a good ride with a ciggie in my hand watchin the world, than i ever could in a church being preached to

Just my 50p on it anyway

I believe in God.

But I also believe that for far too long the establishment we know as the 'church' has been self-serving, for all the reasons given above. My mum tells me the most awful stories of her childhood in rural Ireland in the 1930s, where despotic and capricious priests and nuns held the most shocking power and imposed a rule of fear.

We used to attend a middle of the road Church of England church but over the last few years it's changed hugely. I no longer feel comfortable there what with all the visions and prophesying, and being asked to confide my deepest secrets to whoever was sat next to me and so I've stopped going. It plainly suits many others who still go, so there's obviously something in it. I now go for a blat instead.

I want to believe in God.
Its a comforting thought that when we die we go off to paradise and live for ever. Its a nice bedtime story isn't it.

I have a friend who is a devout Christian. He does a lot of stuff helping the poor and underprivelleged etc. It gives him a great deal of fulfilment.

I don't see how that can be bad even though it is (Christianity) based on a load of (1600 year) old ********.

You can do all that stuff without having to be Christian though.
