It telegraphs your intention, makes you easier to swerve around if a car/rider behind has lost their brain/brakes and also means no one can undercut you. My instructor drilled this into me, if ever I was too far to the right he'd slip on my inside just after the life saver and honk as I went to move off - scared the crap out of me but demonstrated his point.

The position in relation to the sign is fairly irrelevant, it's a warning that you should be giving way, the road markings are the giveway line.

And when you do take a position, your forward observation would indicate that the road surface is poor and you hold off it

This guy, took me for my mock test http://www.mototrainingni.com/about-us/ I have to say, that was an absolute privilege! Earlier this week he was teaching BSB rider Glenn Irwin :p But he did the same to me, I didn't leave a gap again

He knows the score!

Looks a good bloke. I'm always in awe of these people who have amassed so much wisdowm and experience and rack up serious mileage over decades without... being killed.
I need to go see my instructor again really, not doing as many miles as I used to

Errr, no we weren't. You're the only person to use the word blame. All I said was that you can reduce the possibility of being rear ended with appropriate rear observation and positioning. Others have added to that argument. Not taking steps that might reduce the possibility of being involved in someone else's mistake doesn't make you "to blame", it just makes you stupid.

There are lots of other little things riders can do to make themselves safer. This thread was originally about asking if people thought loud pipes were one of them. There is plenty of argument that by making lots of noise with your exhaust drivers might be more aware of you, and if you're one of these riders that rides around with little or no anticipation of a developing hazard ahead I suspect that would be to your advantage, personally I've generally found that when I see a hazard ahead I'm off the throttle and covering the horn instead.....

This road snakes so I sat central and able to look down both sides of the coach as it followed the contours, then moved ready for the silver car to pass and gone.

I'm confident this driver has no real clue I was even there, despite being behind for long enough.

This is quite on point with DRLs and being seen. I can see the nose of the car long before the camera can so note how I change position, drop 2 gears and allow the BMW to get up to speed. No dramas, no revbombs like on youtube, no swearing.

No panic anywhere here, just positioning, observation including to the rear + lifesavers.

Maybe one of these is in order - 100mm long by 20mm x 20mm

The LB03 type is steady 'normal; position light and either flashing or not flashing
stop light, you can get LB02 version which features 'knight rider' normal brightness
tail lamp scrolling LEDs ( which I guess would be illegal in UK ) with flashing stop light brights.
