In my opinion the CBR 600 FM - FW have one of the best engines the Japs have ever produced. I have maintained several to well past the 100k mark, with only a camchain & a tensioner or 3 needing replacement. I do feel that since the alloy framed FX model was introduced in 1999 Honda along with the others have lost their way somewhat. For in real terms, the usable performance of todays sports bike engines isn't that much greater than the above. Whereas the maintenance costs have increased dramatically, along with reduced longevity. I spent 2 days preparing Plowsies bike, which is actually an FP model. I took it for a 20 mile spin to blow out the cobwebs, & boy did it go! So watch out chaps, when it's de-restricted all you're going to see of him is a rapidly disappearing number plate if you're on an SV! (Fighting talk or what):D:D Cheers. |
Re: The CBR
I feel really jealous that I didnt buy it now! Looks like a nice bike.

Re: The CBR
Morning all.
If only I could find a few more like that eh!:D I don't generally get involved with buying & selling, as I couldn't sell a bike with a clear conscience unless I had been from one end to the other & replaced everything I thought needed doing. Which would mean that the end price would be much higher than average for any given year & mileage. Including the exhaust that the previous owner had bought from me in May of this year, & the new parts I fitted to Plowsies bike exceeded £900 at retail prices, not including the restrictor kit. & then there's the matter of two days labour. Pretty difficult to make it viable eh. Cheers. |

Re: The CBR
Morning all.
I rode a 600RR to my local MOT station & back, & that was enough! I guess they might be ok if you're about 5'6" But for us hefty 6' plus (older) types they're bloody uncomfortable! As I've said the maintenance costs of the newer models is getting ridiculous, £65 + for a set of spark plugs & so on. Not to mention the time taken to actually get in there.....To change the plugs on a CBR1000 blade takes me at least 2 hours, & I've done several.....I remember thinking when the original Blade came out in 1992 that bikes couldn't possibly get more fiddly to work on. Oh how wrong can one be!:D Cheers. |

Is even the old sttelie CBR 'practical' anyway??? ... lets face it the ~90hp the stelies offer is ludicrous power* anyway!! Before they bought out the RR the CBR was always thought to be the dull/thinking mans 600 ... I've owned 2, but I'd never have walked into a show room and bought one NEW ... but I nearly bought an RR as it (the way it looked/performed) made me cream my pants when it first came out!! :D The old sttelies offer a lot of bike per buck these days and as you say, the engines are a little bulletproof gem!! 8) *At what 250kg all up, that is ~400hp per ton --> that is supercar type hp ;)) |
