I'm just starting in the world of SV (and bikes for that matter) and I'm based in Leamington so will hopefully be joining some of the rides around here. Are most of them down my way or a bit further up? This region is too bloody big!

It is indeed. Compared with other areas we are spread quite thinly. That's why we need to try a bit harder to get together and do stuff.

So is the South & West Surfers section, is covers, South Wales, Devon, Cornwal, Somerset, Dorset and across into Hampshire, then down in towards Portsmouth as well...

We're spread about, but each area does its own thing, the welsh lot have their own meet, the Bristol lot did to, and us lot down on south have the Poole Quay bike meet we go to. We're also talking about starting another meet on the Dorset / Somerset border.

Its not the size of the region thats the problem...

That's not the topic of this thread either! :p

We've got a lot of votes in favour of a new name - when does this poll run out and if it ends in a 'Yay' are we then having a poll on potential new names? And are we being allowed to change the name? Not sure if this has been established yet....

Good point. Assuming the org. is run on a democratic basis, we sould be allowed to change the regional name. I'm not sure how many serious suggestions we have for a new name. We need to get it right or all the other regions will take the p*ss.

They wouldn't would they?! :p

I've actually put forward two or three suggestions that I intended to be serious but we'll come up with some more for a poll (still assuming we're allowed to change it)

Cheers,
Matt

Re: All those in favour of a new regional name for the midlands

Like others have said, I think the issue is the size of the group. Like Pete & Lissa, we have no problems travelling 120 miles to a start point, we have done it frequently to North / South Wales at various points. But I know this can put some people off.

However, if you split the area into more regional sections, then as has been tried before there are just not enough people in the cut down areas to provide enough input.

My view, change the name, as Migts doesn't really mean a lot IMO, simple "Midlanders" etc would suffice. But the name is only a small part. The people is what matters, I am happy to do more Midlands frivolities and will happily input more, but up till now, the only option most people have had is to go to other regions.

So does anyone have any views on core areas where rides could take place to appease the whole group? The central area seems to be Leicester accross to Cannock etc, but I am unsure of the roads round there. If people were happy to travel slightly further South I was thinking of organising a jaunt into the North Cotswolds as I know a lot of the really nice twisty back roads that Mr Caravan tends to keep clear of. I'm sure being such a central area we could probably attract other people to a ride there also. Just a thought, but if people are interested then I will organise something, start thinking dates etc.

Its your section, if you all agree on a name then we'll change it.

Liase with your section mod and then we'll make the change once its all sorted out.

How often do the section moderators visit the site? I believe Derbybiker has been contacted. I may be wrong.
